RalliSport Challenge 2
Once again, the King of Xbox Rally games!

by:
May 02, 2004

Game play modes consist of Rally, which is how the pros do it. No laps, just road, and whoever has the fastest time is the winner. Crossover is where 2 cars race the same track but on difference sides, and after a lap they end up crossing over and switching sides to keep the race fair. Rally Cross is the mode where 4 cars go head to head to see who can come in first. It’s an all out war to see who the best driver in the pack is. Hill climb is exactly what it sounds like - it's Rally mode, just uphill. Finally, there is Ice Racing, which is just chaos - cars were not meant to drive on sheet ice, and it shows, but it's damn fun.

One of the more sim-like aspects of the game is car handling. No two cars really handle alike. Even if a car is in the same class, it could handle completely differently, and if you don’t compensate and learn quickly, you’re not going to come in first.

The multiplayer raised a lot of questions for me - rally racing isn’t exactly a sport where many cars go toe to toe on the track at the same time; it’s more of a time trial sport. In RS2, that wouldn’t make for a very fun online mode. DICE answered my questions with the same answer Bizarre gave us in PGR2. Collision detection gets turned off depending on situation or settings, which keeps the flow of the game going and prevents the kiddies from wrong way antics. Overall, it’s really a blast on Live and it plays very smoothly.

There is 4 way multiplayer on 1 Xbox, but the game suffers a bit from it. The cars and tracks aren’t as detailed and any kind of filtering has turned down or off. The game still moves at a solid frame rate, but it doesn’t look as good.

A bit of sim mixed with a bit of arcade is the RalliSport formula for success, and it pays off. Whether you’re an arcade rally fan who loved Sega Rally, or you're into hardcore sims, you can enjoy this game. Whether it's the insane speed, the ability to tune your car, or the amazing graphics, this game is a keeper for every racing fan.
