Midway Arcade Treasures
Some of the greatest games of all time come together in one collection.

by:
July 13, 2004

Midway Arcade Treasures is a plethora of titles from the days when Midway was far more dominant then Electronic Arts, a simpler time when people were much easier impressed, and when Midway was the “Rockstar” developer for years. Normally I wouldn’t get excited about another compilation of titles that have since transformed into three-dimensional multi-million dollar counterparts but the wealth of games for the price of fifty bucks or probably less is alarming:

Game List

• A.P.B.
• Arch Rivals
• Championship Sprint
• Cyber-Ball
• Gauntlet 2
• Hard Drivin’
• Mortal Kombat
• Mortal Kombat 2
• Mortal Kombat 3
• NARC
• Pit Fighter
• Primal Rage
• Rampage World Tour
• Spy Hunter 2
• Steel Talons
• STUN Runner
• Timber
• Total Carnage
• Wizard of Wor
• Xenophobe
• Xybots

When I saw the list of games that was on this compilation I quickly reminisced to childhood memories of going to the arcade and playing the latest Mortal Kombat, Primal Rage, or buying the $60 Mortal Kombat II SNES game and playing it way past my bedtime. I have had this idea that the majority of Xbox Evolved’s viewers are between 16-30 so I am sure that the readers themselves have fond memories of playing at least one of these games.

I had a chance to play some of the games on Xbox and they have definitely translated well with controls and games such as Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II are actually more true to their arcade counterparts then the Super Nintendo could of ever hoped to be. The game isn’t without faults and almost echoes Midway’s successes and failures. Obviously very few of Midway’s titles stood the test of time but this is definitely a title to pick up when it is released this fall, if not to show younger siblings, perhaps your children that many of these games were your ‘GTA’ of the time.
