MTV has a few franchises in the video game world. Actually let me clear up, they only have one franchise and the rest are all pure crap. The MTV name has been put on MTV’s Celebrity Death Match and that turned out to be horrible. In the past MTV put their name on their own sports line-up that mainly was on the Playstation. It was for extreme sports like BMX and Skateboarding. You can tell by the success of that series when you see that they stopped making them like five years ago. What MTV does have going for them is MTV Music Generator. The third game in the franchise shows that they still have some long legs to run in this video game marathon but they still aren’t leading the pack.
Let me make a quick comparison to Microsoft’s own Music Mixer. MTV Music Generator has a better feel and look to it. It fits well on the consoles rather then with the Music Mixer feeling like it’s an application just being added on to a PC. So MTV Music Generator is technically the best but it didn’t make strides in the right direction which I will cover in a few minutes.
Codemasters has included 10 different musicians to remix off of. Snoop Dogg, Sean Paul, Outkast, Carl Cox and others are right at the user’s finger tips to remix. There really isn’t a whole bunch of songs to remix as they want you to focus on making your own songs rather then mixing up others. In this case, I really felt like I didn’t have enough of a variety to work with. I didn’t want to make my own music but change up famous musicians’ work to my own liking.
What impressed me the most was the slick interface that made making music so easy. The learning curve I would say would be about twenty minutes and then you’re on your way to making music. I often found myself trying to work with Outkast’s music as they are probably the most popular at this moment with mainstream.
