NOTE: Interview was originally published on old Xbox Evolved on November 04, 2002 when Microsoft was still set to publish the game--interesting fact you won't see in this interview, Tiwak hopes to create a second Tork game!
Xbox Evolved:How do you think Tork will compare to current (lack) of platformers on the Xbox?
Yann:There are no "real" arcade platformer for Xbox right now. Our approach is to combine all the best of the genre... It's "pure fun" in a beautiful environment, full of life, with special effects like never before in any other platformers. Our aim is not only to have the best platformer for Xbox, but definitely be "the ultimate" platform game, on all consoles.
How do we do this? In a few words, the basic concept would be "have as much fun as you can in an furious fast paced arcade platformer". Part of the fun definitely comes from the transformation into powerful creatures (It makes it more fun to fight!) Smooth main character behavior and strong camera system help a lot too.
If you want, you can play the whole game without changing camera angles by yourself a single time! It makes it easier for the player to focus on the gaming part.
Xbox Evolved:What sort of similarities does Tork have the previous critically acclaimed Rayman and Rayman 2 that many of the Tiwak's team members have worked on?
Yann:For sure it was helpful to have worked on Rayman and Rayman 2 before, for example, I had done a lot of work over the years to have a nice feeling when you handle the main character, and it helped me of course for the behavior of Tork, but Tork is totally innovative compared to Rayman 2. We based the fun on "feelings" more than thinking. You just need to take the controller to have fun and the more you play, the more you have fun! Will you believe me if I tell you I still have fun when I play for the 10th time the same level?
Rayman 2 was far more exploration based, you had very little combat, and it was only far combat (shooting). Tork has a huge number of enemies, more graphic variety, amazing special FX, the pace is much faster than Rayman 2, it's full of life and action and you can interact with pretty much everything in the game.
We really pushed the genre to a new level. Even the graphics are much better! You can still see find similarities in the game to Rayman 2 thanks to the "graphic touch" of Jean Christophe, who was lead artist on Rayman 2. Also in Tork, you know where to go, and don't have to take care of the camera (just like in old 2D arcade games), so you don't loose time on too much exploration and you can focus on the gaming! You have a lot of bonus and power-ups and there is always something happening on the screen.
