Since the release of the Xbox, games featuring mechanical monstrosities piloted by humans in the future have helped to define the console. Titles such as Steel Battalion, and Mech Assault have especially solidified the Xbox as a “mech fans console”. Tecmo is now releasing Gungriffon: Allied Strike into the Mech foray in attempts to cash in on a niche market that is very enamored with giant robots, offering a unqiue spin on the genre, with a online mode that includes a co-op mode. The game developed by Game Arts has before only appeared on the PlayStation systems.
While the game is based around mechs, the technical name for the mechs is “High Mac” (High-Mobility Armored Combat System). The armor and artillery in your High Mac change depending on battle conditions. Gungriffon: Allied Strike takes place in a hostile futuristic world where there is little hope for survival among the human race. The earth’s resources have been exhausted and people are continuously splitting into groups to fight for what is left of it. The player takes on the role of a renegade soldier, enlisted in an anti-tank troop, who’s prime mission is to take down armored tanks, the ultimate ground weapon used to destroy the earth and any living thing that gets in its way. Boasting full Xbox Live compatibility that supports up to 8 players via online mode and a variety of exciting missions, Gungriffon: Allied Strike offers an exhilarating and unique spin on mech action games.
Allied Strike also includes a thrilling online multi-player, supporting up to eight players. Players will be able to play co-op style or solo in a variety of modes while taking down the strongest of enemies with quick and smooth communications using the voice chat function. To win the mission, players must become skilled at strategizing tactics in order to bring the enemy down and reign victorious. Visually the game looks like a mixed bag, and based off of an older PlayStation 2 version of the title. It is definitely going to need a lot of special effects to bring it up to par with the many impressively created mech titles already out on Xbox.
The title was silently announced just a few weeks ago, with only confirmation of a Gungriffon title on Xbox at E3 this year. Tecmo taking an apparent “Xbox Only” stance launches the title against FASA Studios’ Mech Assault 2 Lone Wolf this month as well. With plenty of games featuring mech play on the Xbox already, we will patiently wait to see if Allied Strike offers enough to be worth checking out. Look for our review of the title later this month, with a face-off with Mech Assault 2 Lone Wolf shortly thereafter.
