If you are a big RPG gamer, you most likely have not tuned into the previous titles for the series. But, if you infact are an RPG gamer, you will love this game. Read the review to find out why!
Story
I must say the story is one of the strongest parts of this game. When you first start the game, you might find it confusing and well, boring. But, do not fear, it certainly pays off. The story pulls you in with many surprises and various loops. One minute you will be on your way to stop the Goblins from sounded the warhammer, and the next minute, you'll have a new quest to kill all the trolls in the caves of Moria. I mean, which one am I supposed to do? That is what is great about this game.
Several quests and objective will punch you in the face at every corner. That is why the story is one of the most in-depth parts of the game. You have several choices throughout the game. Many times you will be faced with six quests. "Hmm...which one should I choose?" The one that sounds the most exciting of course! During the end of the game is when the story really starts to kick ass. At the ending point of the game, many of the questions you have had stored up in your brain thriving to be answered, are finally revealed. At this point you may be telling yourself, "This game actually sounds pretty good." Well, it is, and it only goes uphill from here.
At certain points in the game, two of the women fight over...you (Yeah, that's a first huh?) One girl kisses you, the other gets mad, and vice versa. It never ends! Ok, enough with that, lets get back to the real point. EA has done an amazing job with the story and other various elements tied into it. The voice acting is incredible. Though, I found it very odd how in the beginning of the game, the voice acting was unbelievable. But when I reached the half way pint, it's like they toned it down a little. No longer was the lip syncing very accurate, it's now just mediocre. It confused the hell out of me. But, it doesn't make the cutscenes any worse.
Gameplay
The gameplay is surely the best part of the game. This game can range from around 20-50 hours considering if you complete every quest at each region. The game is fairly easy and can sometimes be incredibly frustrating. Although the story is good, the gameplay rules all. The radar on the upper right hand corner doesn't do much good. Sometimes when you have a quest, it won't even give you directions on where to go, they could have upgraded it more.
Your characters have many choices of weapons/armor options. After almost every battle, new weapons and or armor will be awarded to you. The options for picking your armor and weapons are endless. There is over 12 groups of armor and many weapons to choose from. There is around 15 types of armor for each group. As you can see, the options are endless.
Lets make our way toward the battle system. Overall, the battle system is great. It is very similar to Final Fantasy X and KOTOR's battle systems. I love how this game is turn-based, rather than free-based. You have so much more time to craft items and to choose any attack you like, (as long as you have enough AP that is.) This game is like many RPG's, it has HP (Hit Points), and Ability Points (AP.) Throughout the game you will unlock many new skills. Ranging from using piercing attacks, to using leadership skills to increase your parties armor rating throughout the battle. You will literally be on your toes to find out what skill you achieve next. You can also go to the start menu and choose which skill you would like to learn next, which is very helpful in the longrun. Another dissapointing factor in the game is that whichever region you are in, you will battle the same enemies over and over again, until it drives you crazy. I found it very annoying and under developed. EA could have at least made three types of enemies for each region, not two. I mean, three is bad enough, but two? Come on. They should know better than that.
One of the best options in the game is "Perfect Mode." This occurs when you perfect meter on the lower right hand of the screen if full and shows the ring in the center. Once it is full, you have some options of choosing which perfect mode you would like to use. You can use the Fangorn to pound the hell out of your foes, or you could use Arrow Volley which shoots several arrows at each foe. The results are amazing. Another awesome feature is where as the farther into the game you get, you unlock different chapters of evil mode, and you can play as the enemies and kill all the good guys, it's great.
The Co-op is also a new feature to an RPG which I have not seen before. There is not much to say about co-op. I would just stick with the single player, co-op is just a new feature they decided to throw into the game. But, if you have two controllers, and a friend, go for it, it delivers a pretty enjoyable experience.
