We all have played the Call of Dutys' on the PC, and there is no doubt you loved them. From the great FPS feel, to the smooth graphics and stunning exlosions, it was nearly perfection. But Call of Duty's PC days are over, and now a multi-platformer. Did they take a step in the right direction? No, and find out why not.
Story
Let's go back in time to the years of World War II. The story is based on the years of Hitlers rule and the Nazi invasions. Throughout the game you switch between Russians, British, and Americans. Each out to kill every German they find. The game consists of a variety of squad based missions, and driven by the horribly non-genius tank missions.
There are 3 levels and about 8 missions in each. Through each mission you play as a different character each thriving to completer their given task. The voice-overs are fairly good, but could have used a little more work. Unfortunately, the lip-syncing is not on key with the voice-overs at all, which makes for some pretty unbearable cutscenes. Once in awhile you are faced with a stealth mission, but you will come to find that there is absolutely no stealth involved. Your lutenaint will tell you to stay low and not let the enemies see you, but as soon as the missions starts, your lutenaint is running around firing everything he has got at them.
This game is linear to the max. Everything is straight foward and told like it is. No back-tracking or searching is involved. Though the game is fairly easy, it can be one of the most frustrating games you'll ever play. When faced with an objective, it may take several tries to complete. It gets to the point where you just say, "Phf, **** this game!" After countless tries, you finally complete the objective and can walk away with your pride.
As the game lengthens, the story gets better. I must say, the last mission is better than all the missions put together. So, if you get tired of the story, just hold tight, the last mission definitely pays off.
Gameplay
Forunately, the gameplay is the best part of the game and is the most in-depth. Unfortunately, the gameplay is the only thing that makes this game what it is. You always start off with a single gun, but you may find and pick up other guns as time goes by. You are also equipped with several grenades, depending on which weapon you start out with. Grenades are helpful but cannot be thrown very far, and there is no target for where the grenade will be thrown to, so they are mostly innacurate, unless you are at close range. I suggest you stick with a rifle and just pick your enemies off with medium ranged head shots.
Your teammates don't do much on the battlefield, they just kind of hang around and let you do all the fighting. Let's talk about maneuvering and firing with the tanks for a little bit. The controls for the tank are the worst tank controls I have ever seen in any games I have played. You turn and accelerate with the left thumbstick, and aim for the cannon with the right thumbstick. It is a lot harder than it sounds, trust me. The more you can stay away from the tank, the better.
The options of grabbing any weapon you'd like are endless, they are everywhere. Another good factor about the game is that you can crouch 2 different times, where-as you can crouch, then you can lie down. The A.I. in the game is pretty bad and is very underdeveloped. The enemies will stand right in fron of you very clueless at times, but sometimes they will see you and throw some grenades and/or fire there weapons at you.
I found out that on XBOX Live, lieing down and carrying a sniper is the best tactic there is. On that note, lets talk about XBOX Live.
XBOX Live
Lemme' tell you, XBOX Live is the best part of the game. I enjoyed it very much and even steered away from Halo 2 a couple of times to play it. The modes on XBOX Live consist of Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Search and Destroy. I love Capture the Flag, so that was what I was mostly playing.
Don't bother to use your headset, because noone ever talks in the game, which kind of made the game a little plain and boring. I also found it funny that all you have to do is run over the enemies flag to grab it, and somehow, it magically floats above your head, and you still have the options of throwing grenades and firing your weapon. The gameplay is fairly realistic in many ways. Where-as a shot to the head with a sniper rifle, will kill them. But, using a PPSH, (A.K.A. Machine Gun) will take several shots to the head or any other part of the body until reaching death.
They could have spent much more time on constructing the layouts for Live. For example: You will see your teammates and other enemies hovering across the map while throwing a frag grenade. You can also play system link with another XBOX from across te house. But I would stick with XBOX Live, it delivers a pretty enjoyable experience.
