InXile was created in late 2002 and has released a statement saying, “Our goal is to remain focused on very few titles so that the InXile name becomes one you can count on for quality games.”- Brian Fargo) though they say they deliver quality games, but this one is an exception. The publishers of the game, (Vivendi Universal) are also the creators of the Half-Life series, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay .
Story
You’re put in the mind and body of a rogue agent, also known as a “Bard.” Collecting more tunes, talents, and gaining levels are a part of completing the game. The more tunes you get, the easier the game will become. Casting your spells with the lute, help you gain more experience points faster, which levels you up quicker. The best way to get through this story is by leveling up and earning as many talents and tunes that you can.
The tale is divided into various chapters residing in different villages and forests. Overall, the story runs out to be a good 20 plus hour story. You’ll be faced with many quests throughout your journey, each divided into different chapters. Each chapter contains about 5 quests, running at around 10 minutes to complete each. Quests are based into small objectives.
The end of each chapter features a new village or a fairly hard boss. As you progress in the game, the story becomes more compelling and more immersive. Though I must say the story is the most in-depth part of the game, and it delivers some addicting and fun filled chapters.
Gameplay
What the hell happened here? For such a well put together story, the gameplay certainly drags it down. The combat system is free-based, where-as you run around and button mash. Though it is hard to engage in combat while the camera is bird’s eye view.(camera looking at you from above in the sky) So it makes running around and attacking is fairly hard, because the giant trees and rocks get in the way of the enemies, so you end up getting injured in the back. The sense of freedom is great to have in this type of game.
With the map located in the upper right hand corner, it makes it easier for you to find out where you’re next location is and to do objectives and complete your quests. No items or skills can be used during combat. There is really no skill involved in taking down your enemies. If you know how to button mash, then you’ll be through this game in no time. All that needs to be done is button mashing the “A” button, and they’ll be down in no time. You can learn different skills and talents each time you level up. You can learn how to dual-wield, or even learn how to use your shield for various ways. There is really no skill involved in combat. If you know how to kill your thumb be pressing “A” as fast as you can, then you’ll be on your way to the end. This title is basically a hack n’ slash RPG. Though, I don’t know how it earned the title of RPG, I think it should just be an action/adventure title.
The shield can be used to defend yourself, and also be used for offensive attack. For example: You’re holding a Longsword in your right hand, and your shield in the other. Use a few combinations with the “A” button, and he’ll swing with the right hand, and bash with the left, making it slightly a little more exciting. There isn’t much of a choice of weaponry and armor throughout the game. Though the gameplay doesn’t deliver much, it’s still mediocre overall.
