The movie Constantine is great, and your probably thinking, “Oh a game based on the movie? This is going to suck I just watched the movie, Why would I want to play this?” However, other then the same basic (very basic) plot and intro movie to the game, this is completely different. Although it’s very short, Constantine is a very sturdy action adventure game, and is at least worth a rent.
Story
If your thinking “I saw the movie I don’t need to read” your wrong. I thought the same thing up until after the first movie. The intro movies to both are about the same, John performing an exorcism. But after that the game makes a drastic change you start looking for parts for your shotgun. From there the game progresses of course, and it eventually consumes the plot of the movie, with some major changes, but you still fight and kill a huge and powerful demon on earth (Balthazar) and have to try to keep that human girl alive. But in the game they kind of take for granted that you have seen the movie, taking short cuts in conversations to get to the action quickly.
Gameplay
Constantine is a typical third person shooter. John has his array of weapons, which are typical for most gun games, dual pistols, shotgun, flamethrower, etc. There are only about 6 guns in the game total. John also has his own assortment of spells to cast though, like lightning, confusion, and gargoyle. I liked the way it was set up to cast spells, fist you needed to press the button to initiate casting the spell, and then actually cast the spell. To cast the spell you needed to press the right combination of X, A, B, and Y, and you only had a certain amount of time to press each. Most of the spells you learn though are useless that I never used. John also has his true sight, that is where all the colors become messed up, and you can see invisible creatures, and secret spots. The game never really gets hard to find out where to go next because either John will tell you or a quick glance into true sight will tell you right away. There is also Johns melee attacks, which are slow, very slow. Its better to change to a weapon for close range then melee attack, but one good thing about the melee attacks is that it makes breaking windows cheep. Throughout the game there are secrets strung about. Most of these are very easy to find and are just sitting in the middle of the room or in a corner. There are about 6-12 secrets per level. Each secret is something different like movie sketches, scenery sketches, etc. There is 2 things I hated about the game play in Constantine, the first is how John climbs. To climb onto a box you need to be standing right in front of the box and hold forward, because there is no jump. The second thing I really hated was if you press in the left joystick, which controls your movements, John will do a 180 to quickly look behind himself. Right now your probably thinking “that’s a good thing though, what if u need to look behind yourself quickly?” well you never need to look behind yourself quickly and when I try to back track from enemies I gradually press the joystick in so in the middle of fighting a boss I would turn my back on him, and John takes a while to start moving after doing that 180 so I got beat down a lot because of that.
