Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Interview
We get a chance to ask Gavin Carter, producer of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion a few questions about this highly anticipated Xbox 360 title.

by:
May 27, 2005

XE: What is your role in making the game? How much input do you have?

Gavin: My role on the project is producer. Overall my job is to make sure the trains run on time, so to speak. Or at least know how late or early they're going to be! I go to lots of meetings, talk with lots of our developers, and try to make sure we're on track to hit our milestones. I have a lot of input over all aspects of the game, though I work primarily with our programmers and character artists.

XE: What can you tell us about the races in the game? How many are there? Are there going to be any new editions?

Gavin: All 10 races that were featured in Morrowind will be making a return. You'll be able to play as human variants, like Nords and Imperials, Elf variants like Wood Elves or Dark Elves, Orcs, and the two "beast races" - Khajiits (cat-people) and Argonians (lizard-people). We aren't planning to add any new races.

XE: What elements in the game will be totally foreign to us, and what will we pick up on right away?

Gavin:Well, it plays like any other first-person (or third person) game in terms of controls and so forth. So how you move around and interact with the world will feel very natural. The classic fantasy setting will feel very familiar. I don't think there will be anything really foreign to you, at least not until you enter the plane of Oblivion for the first time, then all bets are off.

XE: According to Microsoft, every single Xbox 360 game has Xbox Live implemented in it, even on the most standard level. What sorts of Xbox Live features can we expect in Oblivion?

Gavin: We're very excited by the possibilities Xbox Live offers us to deliver new content and experiences to our players. Of course, the game will be Live Aware. We will also be looking to do a lot of downloadable content for the game going forward from release. We have some other ideas too, so look for us to talk more about this in the future.

XE: How did Patrick Stewart get involved with the project? Can you give us hints on any other voice talents?

Gavin: Quite simply, we had targeted him as someone we wanted to talk to about that role (the Emperor) and he accepted. His presence really brings a lot to the game, and that character. Sorry, no hints on the other people, you'll just have to wait.
