Need for Speed Most Wanted Interview
While at Electronic Arts Canada I got the chance to ask a lot of the team some questions about the upcoming game and what it will be like on both the Xbox and the Xbox 360.

by: John Olin
August 23, 2005

XE: What is the inspiration for the title?

Larry: It is a number of things. It could be driving home from work, and looking back at the corner one of the guys just turned and like the feel of it. So we want to go into the game and try and recreate that feeling.

XE: Well what about ‘Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition’?

Larry: I would say certain aspects yeah, but that game did good with the culture surrounding street racing, and not as well on the gameplay—we strive to hit the sweet spot between the two.

XE: Do you work on other games, network/share techniques with other parts of EA?

Larry: Work on other games? Each team at EA at any given time could be working on four-six different versions of a game so there isn’t time to do that. We do have meetings periodically to show what we can do, see what they can do, trade techniques, tools, and so on.

XE: Will the more spectacular things like driving under a semi truck be timed or more random?

Justin: Not really timed, but what it will be is, say you slow down the time so you can concentrate, you can direct your car more under or over things that would have been harder if you didn’t. There will be a lot of these moments in drag races.

Let us 360 our way onto the pier!

XE: What kind of research went into the game?

Habib: Well basically it all comes down to what is the right look. In the past games like Hot Pursuit we had very picturesque look. This one we want to push certain things to the extreme, exaggerate a bit on some effects, and so on so you get that look of the speed. Also I took a look at a lot of car ads, or pictures of cars going in motion. In real life the sun will cast a lot of washed out colors, sometimes brown on the tarmac. So you see a much different look in this one, with that sort of realistic aspect in it.

XE: What about using RSS or XML Feeds?

Justin: That is something we would really consider for the next Need for Speed titles but for this one we don’t have it. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of games in the future have some sort of feeds if they were online.

XE: What kind of modes are there online?

Justin: Right now we aren’t really talking about them but we do have drag, tollbooth, and sprint racing.

XE: When I would talk about ‘Project Gotham Racing 3’ around some of you guys, it seemed like the idea of it offended some of you. What’s up with that?

Justin: Not really offended by the idea of it but some things about it that you suggested before like Gotham TV don’t really fit in with what we are doing. I would just much rather play the game than watch it.

We thank everyone at EAX/EA Canada, EA PR representatives, and of course the other people who work on gaming sites. Check out some more of our EA adventures and Need for Speed Most Wanted hands-on a XE this week!
