Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
EA finally has delivered Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Does it live up to one of the best multiplayer FPS titles around?

Back on track, Battlefield 2 features over 30 vehicles to drive. You’ll be able to drive the usual tanks, jeeps and humvees for old time favorites. Other oddball vehicles include snowmobiles, boats, helicopters and transport trucks. Battlefield has always featured great vehicles and Modern Combat is no different.

After communicating with a few Battlefield 2 vets from the original Xbox version, they agree with me that the enemy A.I. has been anted up. The opponents will be a little stiffer and react accordingly to your actions. Hardly anything you’ll consider a breeze. You’ll want to be alert at all times.

Snowmobiles! Can't resist, I must ride it.

The hardest thing of Battlefield may be the helicopter. The control of the chopper will be rough the first time, and I can guarantee a death or two the first few times you take flight. The control over the soldiers is basic. If you have ever played a FPS before, this will be a synch to pick up and play. You’ll be in control over a main weapon, secondary weapon and explosives. The problem isn’t in the soldiers since it is quite simple, but, the problem is actually with the vehicles. Some feel loose and wobbly. The humvees swerve a little with old arcade controls. They are on par with every other FPS currently sitting in the middle of the pack. The controls are nothing extraordinary if I must say so myself.

The depth of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat all lies in the multiplayer. Anyone and everyone should know this. If you have played any past installment, you know that the multiplayer has always overshadowed the single-player campaign. Modern Combat is no different with the multiplayer overpowering the single-player. The multiplayer is limited to only two modes- Conquest and Capture the Flag. Conquest put you in the shoes of a team fighting off enemy forces from taking your team’s control points. Capture the Flag should be self-explanatory. With over 24 players online, this should be a hot spot for the next few weeks for one of the top Xbox Live games. Joining clans, earning points for your rank, and just all out mayhem, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a strong candidate for everybody’s next Xbox 360 game.

The graphics are better than the original Xbox version like I stated earlier. You’ll quickly notice the difference with the guns. The real graphical upgrade could be that everything has a shiny look to it. The vehicles shine from the sun beating down on it, the walls shine, and it could possibly be that everything supports a glare now. The sound is disappointing for a next-gen game. You’d think they would want an elaborate soundtrack to go with the high action Battlefield 2 puts out. Sadly, the sound is definitely the worst part of Battlefield 2. Just wait for the stereotypical Chinese voice-overs to be played on your television. You should laugh hysterically as I did several times.

Does this Xbox 360 version warrant itself a purchase? It’s a close call. I for one never played the original on the Xbox. I would say yes if you have never played the Xbox or PS2 version. If you have, you may want to skip out currently - not much here is new except the graphics. Wait….there are three new maps available on Xbox Live, nothing that should draw huge amounts of interest.

I am going to play this on Xbox Live to death. Call of Duty 2 didn't fill that void and neither did Perfect Dark Zero. Battlefield 2 is perfect to hold me over until the new maps CoD2 and PDZ draw me back in. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat caters to Xbox live players, if you don't have it, I'd advise another game since no split-screen or system link is supported.
