Urban Chaos is a very good looking game, with the outdoor environments being especially impressive. The bloom lighting looks excellent and shows off the impressive nature of the game. Due the game being in 480p however, there are jaggies present, which do detract from the game’s overall graphics quality, but in motion and in the heat of battle, they’re the least of your worries. If Microsoft made the game backwards compatible, it would look gorgeous with the added anti-aliasing and upscaled HD resolution, so let’s hope it’s added in the next BC update. Subtle touches are one of the strongest points in Urban Chaos, adding lots of small improvements, which measure up over time. If you use the melee attack of the cleaver, it will get bloodier depending on how many enemies you kill. The eyes of anyone killed with also shut and you can see this during a slow motion kill, which is another subtle, yet powerful addition. There is a pretty catchy song used as the game’s theme and the voices are well done for the most part, although I wish that the enemies had more to say. Before each mission is a newscast with a professional newscaster, which helps add to the immersion of the game (there’s also an on-screen clock which matches that of your console’s for more subtle touches), in addition to providing details about the upcoming mission.
The game is a bit over the top, which just adds to the fun factor of it. There’s just something awesome about being able to taser a guy until he self-immolates, which brings back some nice Syphon Filter memories. The guns are all an absolute blast to use (no pun intended) with excellent precision that goes to show that using an analog stick for an FPS doesn’t have to be a gimped experience. While the heavy scripted nature of the game can hinder the replay value, the system link and Xbox Live playability help counter-act that, as do the wonderfully implemented Havok physics. If you just like shooting stuff and felt that Black wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, give Urban Chaos a shot and just watch out for the crazed pyros shooting back.

The excellent shooting and non-standard setting set this game apart and make it worth your time and money. The story may not be all that, but the presentation is pretty good and the graphics certainly aren’t shabby, especially the outdoor environments with the bloom lighting. This game has rekindled my love for shooting enemies and I’ll never get tired of the rewarding squish of an enemy’s head popping from my gun. Urban Chaos is simply just fun to play and while the 360 may be all the rage, this Xbox FPS is better than the majority of FPS’s on the 360.
