The Darkness Review
Does Starbreeze deliver another top-notch title for the Microsoft consoles? Or does The Darkness have no glimmer of hope compared to other 360 FPS titles?

Fans of the genre will be pleased to hear that the mechanics for the straight up shooting is excellent. Jackie can dual wield a wide variety of weapons found within the game. The guns aren’t as powerful as I would have liked compared to the powers provided, but in the end, the game is well balanced. The weapon set will change once players enter World War 1 which was a nice change of scenery but ultimately became tiring to play through.

The multiplayer mode isn’t satisfying enough compared to the gameplay found in the single-player. It provided me a been-there-done-that feeling and could have used a lot of improvements to make it stand out. Nobody will be talking about the multiplayer months down the road such as they have done with Halo 2, Gears of War, and even Battlefield 2.

Moving onto what many gamers judge next-gen games on, the visuals are aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. The character models, environments and weapons all look great meriting Starbreeze another brilliant looking game. Though, it isn’t as grand of work as Starbreeze did with The Chronicles of Riddick on the Xbox. Starbreeze may have set the limits and expectations so high when they used the Xbox to its full power with Riddick. When put side-to-side to other FPS on the 360 at this current point, The Darkness is no slouch – but in the end, it just isn’t a remarkable looking game as Riddick was.

As for the sound, it’s already a given that games sound superb with surround sound. The Darkness has enough sound effects to fill two mediocre shooters on the 360. The sound effects really livened up the experience all throughout. The dialogue is corny and often was nerve breaking. It felt somewhat forced and acted out too much.

The Darkness provides enough entertainment for FPS fans to enjoy all the way through. The gameplay is able to steer the ship to its destination -- that being for a complete game with an unique experience.
