Halo 3 Review
Check out our review editor's review of Halo 3. Does it live up to hype? Does the Master Chief finish the fight in full glory?

by: Dakota Grabowski
September 26, 2007

Moving on, Halo 3 introduces players to a lot of new vehicles and weapons. My personal favorite happens to be the Gravity Hammer. Used by Tartarus in Halo 2, players can now exact their revenge with the swinging of the hammer on their opponents. Essentially, a lot of the weapons in Halo 3 are from the Brutes. There’s the Brute Spiker that leaves needles stuck inside the body as they penetrate the target. The Brute Spiker can be dual wielded and is effective in close perimeters. Also, the Brutes lay claim to the Mauler -- which is a single-handed shotgun that can be dual wielded.

Perhaps one of the more interesting additions to the weapons is the ability to demount turrets and carry them around the battlefield. Having the ability to have a Heavy Machine Gun in mid-range combat is deadly – I often had many of my double kills with spraying countless bullets in the nearby vicinity of a firefight. The Covenant also feature new weapons such as the Fuel Rod Cannon and an automatic plasma cannon to detach from its turret. The humans on the other hand feature a missile pod, the actual appearance of a flamethrower to please fanatics, a Spartan laser, and the return of the assault rifle.

Halo 3 offers a lot more unique possibilities than any other first-person shooter.

The vehicles are one of my favorite aspects of Halo 3 and they are part of the main reason I am enjoying Halo 3 as much as I currently am. Many fans were begging for a four-wheeler of some sorts making its way into the Halo series and Bungie delivered on in the form of the Mongoose. It’s fast, it’s elusive, but should only be used when trying to get to point A to point B. To counter the four-wheeler, Bungie added in a motorcycle with the Brute Chopper. This is honestly the best vehicle, outside of the warthog, to show up in the Halo series. The spikes on the front only exemplify how badass it really is. On top of that, the Brutes also have their own Warthog of sorts with the Brute Prowler. Allowing up to three people (2 passengers and one driver), the Prowler is a great addition to the battlefield. UNSC also now deploys their Elephant, which is similar to the Jawa Sandcrawler from Star Wars. What I find is that the Elephant never makes its appearance in the campaign – it’s only found in the Sandtrap level in multiplayer. Lastly, the humans have their counterpart to the Banshees with the Hornet. There are two to three missions in the campaign but they are a quick diversion from fragging Covenant.

Be ready to save the Earth with the Master Chief.

As for the returning vehicles and weapons, they all work fine. The newbie combo will not work as it once did. The Plasma Pistol will not allow players to hold their charge the whole time until they find an unlucky opponent. The pistol now drains over time as long as you are holding onto the trigger to charge it up. For players that hated that Sword in Halo 2, it too gains a charge/use meter for how many times a player can use it. Humans also have a more powerful, but slower, pistol. In total, all the weapons are almost equally balanced with the exception being the SMG, which is useless throughout the entire game –both the campaign and multiplayer.

Before moving on to the multiplayer, I want to speak about the Flood. The Flood are the only group of the war that receive a new set of creatures in their arsenal of enemies. The Flood now have the “Pure Form” creatures that range from Tanks (lumbering giants) to Ranged (enemies that stick to walls and shoot from the distance) to Stalkers (crawl all over and hard to hit). The Covenant doesn’t have any new enemy types, which I find disappointing after the introduction of the Drones, Prophets and Brutes in Halo 2. The Brutes do receive a few upgrades with armor and jetpacks, but the Covenant doesn’t become a menace like I thought they would become by Halo 3.
