Mass Effect Review
Xbox Evolved has one of the very first web reviews of Mass Effect. Does the game deserve the Game of the Year title? Read on to find out.

by: Dakota Grabowski
November 18, 2007

Moving on, Mass Effect contains several quality shooter elements that many gamers will enjoy. Being able to use cover is one that is becoming increasingly popular in many games nowadays and Bioware incorporated some squad tactics in Mass Effect. The basics provided are the ability to command your teammates to take cover, advance forward, target an enemy, or rally behind you. Outside of that, players can stop time and use their teammate's abilities (provided they didn't use them already) and change weapons on the fly. There are also grenades available to use, but their use was minimal through my playthrough. The problems I encountered with the squad control was that they often got in the way of my line of fire and then complained to me about being shot. Well, it's not my fault they just run out in front of my pistol as I unloaded shots until my gun overheated. Aside from that problem, the squad mechanics are simple and players shouldn't have too many problems warming up to using their teammates by the end of the game.

"Each planet they created, including the uncharted worlds, have a unique look to them to set them apart from each other."

How hard is the game? On the Normal difficulty, I had no problems with overwhelming my opposition. It may have been because I learned how to use my teammates and my own powers to an advantage, but I don't think players will struggle with playing Mass Effect. There are two more modes to play through the game that increase the difficulty and I am betting players will be attempt to finish the game in all three modes due to that there are achievements attached to them.

Thresher Maws ain't got nothing on me!

Outside of the team-based gameplay, Bioware implemented vehicle combat through use of the Mako, a vehicle having six wheels that can climb up mountains with relative ease. The Mako destroys everything in its path since it comes with a turret and rockets. I had no problems taking down the enemies since the Mako can hop over incoming rockets from Geth Colossi. I did wish Bioware included more enemy vehicles besides the two Geth enemies since it felt too easy running down enemies and driving circles around them tearing them apart with rockets. Before moving on from the Mako, with it being the sole way of searching uncharted worlds for hidden items and moving from destination to destination, Bioware must include a speed boost button since it takes too darn long traveling in between points.
