NHL 2K9 Review
|
|
Over the past few years, EA has managed to show that they have the dominant hockey game on the next-gen platforms. NHL 2K9 had its shot this year to try and regain the lead, so did they succeed in doing so?

Personally, the classic control set-up is the most enjoyable here, as the analog set-up in place is very spotty in key areas. There were several instances where shots were going off when they were not meant to, etc. There is also the issue in that players really can’t get all that creative with the controls, as special moves are kept to a minimum.
The controls work, but then again you are really being restricted here if you want to be creative in a hockey game. You don’t have the power over the puck to do what you would want to do with it, as it is more kept to trying to protect the puck, work it around, and get shots.
The A.I. is also something which must be mentioned, as the devs did a good job of allowing you to play on the ice with some smart teammates. On the powerplay, they are in position to make a play all the time, take shots, work it around the zone, etc.
There are some big additions to NHL 2K9 this year in regards to actual team play, starting with the ability to play 6 on 6 over Xbox Live.
The Xbox Live system is well-done here, as long as you get a group of guys who actually want to play position. Online leagues are back again as well.
Beyond that, there is plenty here to do offline in regards to franchise play, and all of that good stuff.

NHL 2K9 is a very good hockey game. The biggest issue it has is the fact that it is going up against arguably the greatest hockey game ever made in NHL 2009 from EA. The game is definitely an upgrade over last year, and if you want a more classic hockey experience this is definitely the way to go. It is clear though that it may be time to go back and start from scratch for the series moving forward. It all just seems to feel a bit dated.
