Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe Review
Mortal Kombat is a series that just doesn’t seem to ever go away due to the constant innovation and work put in by Midway. The franchise has been around for years, and keeps going strong as one of the best choices for fighting fans on any platform.

There is also your standard arcade mode for those not all that interested in the story, online multi-player, etc. The classic arcade mode is exactly as one would expect. The one slight deviation made here due to the crossover licenses is that after choosing which character you’d like to play as, you’ll need to choose whether you’d rather fight against Mortal Kombat characters, DC Universe characters or a mixture of both. Also, you’ll be able to perform fatalities in this mode as well (fatalities aren’t possible in story mode). Other modes include Practice, Online versus, Two-player versus and Kombo Challenge. Kombo Challenge allows you to hone your skills with your favorite characters by performing increasingly difficult combos scripted by the MK designers. Surely this is indeed a challenge as again, the xbox 360 isn’t the best controller in the world for fighting games. Kudos to anyone who completes a character’s Kombo Challenge…because I couldn’t.

Visually, this is a good looking fighting game with some nice details and such on the characters. The biggest issue I have with the visuals though, which also ties in with the gameplay, is the flow of the animations, which come across a bit too jumbled for my liking. Sure it’s not a giant leap from its predecessors but any MK fan will still be pleased with what they will look at. With the toned down violence however you wont get to see all the gore and gruesome moves you may have grown to familiarize yourself with but instead a little bit of animated blood here and there.

The audio is respectable in that you get some decent dialogue in the story mode, along with some quality sound effects and fighting soundtrack. Nothing really over the top here, but there is also nothing that ruins the game.

If the Mortal Kombat fighting experience has been your thing, you’ll find the gameplay to be solid. Even though the title is 3D, it takes place on a 2D plane. You can hold down a trigger button and move around freely, but the core mechanics are classic Mortal Kombat. The next-gen consoles have made the animations and attack transitions more fluid, but there are still the jerky and awkward movements if you’re not spot on with your combos. Nothing against this game so much as just a quirk inherent with the way the combos are handled in the franchise. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is definitely a tighter experience when compared to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
