The multiplayer in this game consists of the same gametypes and elements you are used to in CoD4 with some additions and slight tweaks. The way the lobby system is set up works a little better now with the ability to see everyone in the game lobby’s stats on the leaderboards. If you are in a party, when you join a game everyone in your party will have a blue name and even a blue arrow on radar so that it is easier to distinguish between your party members. All of the gametypes from CoD4 are here and then some, CTF has been brought back and there are more hardcore gametypes to choose from now as well.
If you are unfamiliar with CoD4, the game has different classes you can play as. This will range from assault to sniper. As you get kills, capture bases, win rounds, you will gain experience that goes towards your in game ‘rank’ or level. Once you reach certain levels you unlock different perks and guns to put into your custom classes. Perks are used when customizing your classes and can be used for a number of things, you can have increased health (juggernaut), increased bullet penetration (deep impact), increased hip fire accuracy (steady aim), and a slew of other bonuses. Though you only have 4 perk slots (with the addition of vehicle perks) and can only select 1 in each category.
The game has most of the same perks that CoD4 has, just under a new name. While the game brings some new perks, like shades or flak jacket, most of them seem kind of useless. The one perk that was modified from CoD4 is the last stand perk which is now called second chance. With second chance you go into last stand before you die, though now if anyone else on your team has second chance they can revive you.
I am kind of torn on the guns in this game. The weapons you start out with all suck for the most part. The weapons you get at a higher level are so much more efficient and better all around that it kind of feels like it upsets the balance a little. In CoD4 everyone started with the m16 and the mp5 and they were just as good as any gun you unlocked at a later level, but in this there is no gun equivalent to those two. Then while there are challenges for each gun, the headshot challenges don’t unlock any camo or anything at all, so you don’t get anything to show from completing the challenges other then an experience boost.
They also now have tanks on some of the maps which can be really frustrating. There are sticky anti-tank grenades and rockets, but they don’t do enough damage to kill a tank unless you die, respawn and attack it again. The only true tank combatant is a satchel charge, though sometimes you can’t get close enough to the tank to get it with a charge before being blown up by the tank itself.
The multiplayer is a huge part of the game and it is a lot of fun. I will say that, in my experience, it is not as good as CoD4 when it comes to the core gameplay. Though it is really close and still a ton of fun to play. If you have been playing CoD4 since the game came out you are probably ready for a change of pace anyhow, new maps, new guns, you can’t go wrong with World at War.

Overall I would say this is a great game and worth the purchase. If you were a fan of any previous Call of Duty game, get this game. It is the best WWII shooter available now. If you haven’t played a Call of Duty game before but are interested in the game, don’t let anything stop you from getting into the series now, you won’t regret it.
