Most of the time there are a few of the Ghostbusters with you helping to trap Ghost, and if you are knocked down there to help get you back up. For the most part the A.I. in the game is done well with only a few hitches. Besides ghost, you will go up against a variety of bosses like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. Every boss has it’s own quirks that definitely helps vary up the combat. Unfortunately you do a lot less ghost-busting than you think you would. You traverse to a lot of familiar places such as the hotel you battle Slimer at in the original movie, along with all kinds of great places not really back-tracking to much at all, but you also come across some monsters that simply need to be dissertated. It isn’t nearly as rewarding as trapping a gaggle of ghost although there is plenty of variety in monsters, ghouls, and ghost to go up against. At some points in the game, especially on the hardest difficulty you will be dealing with so many creatures and ghost that it becomes nearly impossible to continue especially with tons of projectiles and monsters swooping at you. The fact that the Ghostbusters go down easily means sometimes battles become a futile exercise in reviving other fallen Ghostbusters.
Another great addition is the PKE meter that Egon uses to scan for ghost and anomalies. When you equip it you go into first-person view with the same kind of goggles Ray used in the movies, and it is fun just to try and find stuff to scan. You can scan ghost, in which case when you do it gives you information on how to best get rid of the ghost, environmental disturbances, and collectibles throughout that have a story behind them and get you achievements. When you are done scanning these collectibles, you can see them strung about in the Ghostbuster’s firehouse. The PKE Meter will actually flash on your belt when there is something in the area and the game will prompt you to get it out as well. Besides that, all of the meters you need are on the back of your proton pack indicating when your proton pack is overheating and such. Egon has a few other great additions for you to use also, such as a slime blower, a stasis stream that acts both as a ghostly shotgun and freezer, and a meson collider. Each has a primary fire and a secondary fire. Every one of these weapons has their own uses as well to help you against a foe or solve a puzzle. For example the slime blower has a secondary slime tether function that allows you to pull ghost out of the way, or push objects into each other to help solve puzzles. The campaign is fairly short and sweet and even on the hardest difficulty it should only take twelve hours or less to complete, although there are plenty of reasons to play it over again and again. The achievements/trophies in the game are a treat as well, and a load of fun unlocking with quotes like “The Flowers are Still Standing” and “Back Off Man I’m A Scientist” taken directly from the movie.
One of many bosses you have to bust.
Probably the most disappointing aspect of the game is no campaign co-op online or off. In its place, you have a sort of mash-up with four people online competing to catch the most ghost. It is loads of fun although you typically have to work together, and you are sometimes enclosed in small spaces that make it very confusing. Working together also kind of takes the competitive edge off of it, but as you play you rank up, capture “most wanted” ghost and get your fair share of ghost-trapping that the campaign lacks at times.
Visually the game gets the job done pretty well. While the cinematic seem out of place at times against the in-game visuals, they do a pretty decent job of moving the story along. Each of the Ghostbusters is pretty dead-on to how they looked back in the early 90’s all the way up to the divots in Bill Murray’s skin. They all seem to have a little bit of a shine and caricature to them, but it gets the job done well. The developers were even able to recapture the blank stares Bill Murray would give, although when talking in cut-scenes the lips sometimes don’t match up to what is being said. The environments are detailed pretty well, and some of them are so sinister that if this was Silent Hill you might be freaking out. Besides the aforementioned all-star cast lending their voices, the original orchestrated score has found its way in too along with some nice additions to help the different music transition. The music keeps up with the action for the most part and right when you are about to trap a ghost the music crescendos with the brass section up until the ghost is trapped just as in the movies. Other than some phoned-in voice acting here and there, and repeating music, you are in for a treat if you know the soundtrack or not.
Some of you may be thinking since this game is based off of a movie owned by Sony Pictures that it would be better on PlayStation 3. Well safe to say, I have played some of the game on PS3 as well and there really is no difference. According to some sites, most notable Ars Technica however, the PS3 version strangely has lower quality textures. On the other hand the PS3 version has a few extra special features and it would look great next to the Ghostbusters Blu-Ray sitting on your shelf. There really is no definitive version if you have a 360 and PS3 so don’t worry about getting shafted if you buy one version over the other.

Ghostbusters The Video Game is a fun romp into the world of the Ghostbusters that captures the look and feel of the original movies with an all-star line-up, great visuals and sound, all wrapped up in a funny and engaging script. This is a no-brainer for fans, and thanks to the incredibly fun and easy to get into “Gears of War style” gameplay newcomers should have no problem getting into it either, just make sure you watch the movies afterwards!
