Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood Review
|

The only Western game out until Red Dead Redemption is one that will definitely keep you satisfied for the time being.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is a fantastic sequel that features a lot of new and improved aspects to the Western first person shooter. Once again you will get to fill the boots of Ray McCall who was the very outspoken hero of the first Call of Juarez. Bound in Blood also puts you in the perspective of Ray's other brothers as they become entangled in the War Between the States and the search for the lost gold of Juarez. New features like the easy peek-around-corners controls and totally revamped online multiplayer make Call of Juarez Bound in Blood a very worthwhile game.
Starting off, I grew a few complaints about the Call of Juarez story and after having played the first game you know how the story is going to turn out by the introduction video before the first single player level. The McCall brothers are all involved in the Civil War fighting for the Confederacy and the run up tells that their father was killed at Antietam. The game finds the brothers at different points during the siege of Atlanta and Ray's determined rage shows how much he is willing to go to rescue his family. Afterwards the brothers start to part ways by taking their own path with one brother becoming a man of the cloth and the other looking for trouble while Ray continues being gun nut crazy Ray. It's a spaghetti western. You better believe it. While there is a lot to the story, fans of the first Call of Juarez will not have too much to expect but what Bound in Blood does perfectly is allow everything to fall into place. This is a great prequel sequel so to say.
I would say Ubisoft has become the master of peek-around controls. From Rainbow Six Vegas to Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Halo will have no excuse for not being able to poke a gun around a box and fire. The greatest addition (or annoyance) to the game is being able to simply peer around boxes and doorways while you shoot from cover. It works great in the single player and can be a very effective multiplayer technique and only gets in the way when you are trying to snipe online and need more visibility. The controls are easier than they were last time where as Billy Candle you had to be careful trying to Indiana Jones your way to the top of a mountain. Thankfully, Bound in Blood is more focused on shooting or blasting your way through obstacles although you will have to use a lasso as Thomas. At least it is not a whip and at least you do not have to use it as often as you had to use Billy's whip. The levels are very exciting as the action and dialogue between the two brothers carries the game all the way through.
The Concentration mode once again allows for you to set a certain amount of shots before a short time limit comes up and Ray or Thomas opens up all cylinders. Ray's mode is very similar to the first game's way where you place your targets and watch the handiwork of Ray's revolvers. Thomas is a little bit different in that you have to draw back the hammer to while you are in Concentration mode.
