Aegis Wing
Aegis Wing is a 2D side strolling starship fighter set in a 3D destructed world. Develop by a group of unpaid Xbox Live interns; Aegis Wing is a cool new attack pace 2D shooter that commands teamwork and quick trigger skills.

First, let’s start off saying that this game is FREE! Most complaints about this game are hard to justify when you got it for free. However, being priced less than a penny is also this game's cursed. How much bang for your buck do you except from a game that did not cost you anything to begin with?

Aegis Wing is no different than any of your regular 2D side strolling shooter than you saw on your SNES. You hold onto your trigger, shooting down a different variety of machine flying monsters. After killing these machines, you can obtain power ups which are usefully unique. Once you get to the end of the map, you fight a boss. That’s were most of the comparisons end.

The graphics have a sleek design with an arcade-ish feel to it. There is nothing drastically next gen except for the use of wide scoop of the screen. The maps in the background are an overlook part of the game. It is so deeply design with the side strolling action, it tricks you into thinking your playing in 3D at times. It also helps that the game provides orchestra background music with cute sound effects. Another polish aspect is the weapon system design when done in full power. You can’t but help look at the pretty weapons firing to blow up your enemies.

The main feature of Aegis Wing is the multiplayer which is by far the most interesting aspect of the game. The ability to form up like Voltron with your buddies on Xbox Live is by far an interesting technique not seen done on any XBLA game. You can either link your ship to a single buddy, link up to 2 ships already conjoin together, or perform the ‘Flying V’ which thought was only possible in the Mighty Ducks. Anyway, while in these conjoin forms with your fellow comrade, your allowed to shoot in a 360 angle. If someone attaches to you, you’re the driver still shooting in a horizontal angle corresponding to your ship movements. While attach, your power up attacks receive a wider range of damage nearly taking up the whole screen. The more of your buddy’s link up, the more damage your team will likely do. The only back fire is that you’re liable to dieing since the entire movement of the party has drop considerably.

Now while all this partnering up is all fun, its short lived. While the game play is amusing, the game is short and provides little variety with challenges. You can also get confused with other player characters on the screen. It is hard to tell each other apart when your ship is the size of a small dot. There is so much going in such a wide scope that you can easily lose sight of your ship in the mist of battle.

The game replay value is dependant on fun factor and achievements. Once both wear out then it’s another geometry wars sitting in your hard drive. Single player is non existent with it being a total bore fest. The multiplayer is where the high pace fun and action is at. Everything else is standard in this small package of a game. Hopefully later, the Xbox Live interns will release a new map pack with different bosses to keep this game alive. It is definitely worth a try and suggests everyone on Xbox Live give it a test run.

Did I mention it was FREE?
