Afro Samurai Review
The baddest samurai story ever created finally has a game and it’s slashed way into my favorites.

by: Michael Ogunnubi
February 16, 2009

Afros, swords, and Samuel L. Jackson could only mean one thing; yep, we’re talking about Afro Samurai. This is the first game published by the new US base under Namco Bandai, Surge. The game is a retelling of the original manga/anime storyline arc (comprising the first season of the anime). While the background involving the two headbands and the conspiracy of the Empty Seven remains the same, several key plot points diverge significantly, and are presumably non-canon. This is where fans of the series may or may not indulge in.

Now I took it upon myself to check out the complete first season of the show to better understand the story and put myself in the shoes of an Afro Samurai fan; to become an Afro Samurai. The TV anime series is set in a "futuristic, yet feudal Japan," and stars a samurai named Afro, because of his hair (go figure). The story follows Afro as he tries to avenge his father's murder. Afro Samurai's father was the old Number One, until he was challenged by a gunman named "Justice" (who was then Number Two), who fought him in a duel to become the new Number One. At the time Justice challenged his father, Afro had only been a child. Now an adult, Afro Samurai is the current Number Two and a master swordsman; seeking revenge on Justice, the current Number One.

The game does a pretty decent job on keeping on track and focusing on the quest for Afro’s revenge and missions to learn. But don’t jump in this game expecting the story line to be 100%, as it kind of sways away from the original storyline into its own creation around it. For example, in the anime, the child Afro is discovered by Jinno and brought to the orphanage. In the game, he is said to have been found by the Sword Master and his brother, the local Daimyo (himself a game-specific character). Jinno does however comment on bringing Afro to the orphanage himself later in the game.
