The developers at Remedy seem to love ironic, sometimes cheesy names for their titles. Max Payne, and Max Payne 2 had a cheesy sounding name, yet you played as a total hard-ass bent on delivering justice (or Payne?) in any way possible, complete with a dramatic graphic novel story telling presentation, and bullet-time shooting action to boot. Now it seems as if though Remedy is taking the concept of explaining the theme and the name of the main character in a completely new way with Alan Wake. There are of course very few solid details on Alan Wake. Originally, it was slated to come to PC, and presumably PC and Xbox 360, now under the umbrella of Microsoft, it is one of the premiere cross platform titles Microsoft is now touting. This means that the title will be coming simultaneously exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC.
This announcement was made of course, at the Microsoft E3 ’06 briefing in Los Angeles in May 2006, and along with it a trailer was shown (which you can download below). The title promises to be a thriller of sorts, assuming there are some platform elements. Within the trailer there seems to be a lot of vehicle play, apparent gun play, and perhaps dark forces following you around, seemingly to an abandoned mountain town. As far as we know right now, it seems to have concepts that could match a game like Konami’s Silent Hill, where you play a normal guy who ends up in a bad predicament.
Perhaps the premise of the game could be found in the actual name of the protagonist, and the game’s name, “Alan Wake”. Being awake seems to be a huge part of the game, and this could be what really defines the title. Visually, if the trailer is to be believed, this is what the game will truly look like. If that is the case, the game has amazing lighting, shadows, day and nighttime effects. It seems as if though the developers are putting a great emphasis on the fact that you see shifts in the time of day in real-time. There isn’t much more that can be said about this elusive title at this point, and the best release date known at this point is sometime in 2007. We will have more on the title as it develops, until then check out the trailer below.
