Band of Bugs
Your Xbox 360 is filled with bugs, Band of Bugs that is. Is Band of Bugs worth infecting your Xbox 360 with?

by: Jason Solorzano
June 29, 2007

Band of Bugs is the latest Xbox Live Arcade title to creep into our Xbox 360 Hard drives, and infest the walls of Xbox Live. Band of Bugs is a turned based strategy game that gives a new meaning to a bug's life. The Band of Bugs is about a insect named Maal who was born different from other bugs. While other bugs hatch from an egg by a different type of jelly (green, blue, dark, etc...), Maal wasn't. Maal hatched without any sort of jelly making him the perfect so called hero of this story. Since Maal wasn't born by any type of jelly, he looks uniquely different than all the other bugs. As the story begins, Maal is set in charge to defend his kingdom of bugs from the 'Evil One', who is set to destroy all the new age bugs. A meteor hit the world inhabited by the insects which cause a portion of bugs to evolved from your normal everyday bugs to human like bugs. Maal and his comrades are sent out to stop the 'Evil One' while Maal learns about himself in the process.

If your confused with the story then don't worry because I believe the developers 'NinjaBee' made it up as they went along. The story felt like it was drawn up on the spot, however it keeps you interested enough to finish the game. It is help with the sense of humor found during the dialog parts, and loading tip ads. Thus being short, and comical at times, it keeps you coming for more. There are over 20 missions to complete in the Band of Bugs, and each one has different set of challenges to complete. However, there all based on one thing, and that's not to let Maal or at times his comrades die.

Well, were screwed...

The battle system for the Band of Bugs flows well with the game. It is similar to a real time strategy game, where you position your bugs around a monster to attack. The position you are facing the bug, and the amount of height advantage from uneven terrain determines the amount of damage you deal upon your enemy. This also depends on the bug characteristic itself as well. There are three classes that you control; Warrior, Mage: Healer, Fire, Ice, and Archer. Warrior leads in physical damage, Mages in Magic, and Archer in bow & arrow. Each class takes serious damage from other opponent bugs expect for the warrior bug which is only Maal. Positioning your bugs like in chess can ultimately lead to success. This is what make Band of Bugs fun, yet challenging at times.

Other then the single player campaign being pretty good, the multiplayer mode is something left to be desired. The multiplayer mode on Xbox Live in one word is BORING. You are left wondering, 'why am I playing this game?'. There are several modes; elimination, escape, capture, spider hunter, and mission. There aren't enough people on Band of Bangs to play each mode, so you are normally stuck on elimination. The reason why multiplayer is so boring is because there are no elements in the single player campaign involved in multiplayer. You end up battling against other monsters trying to score the most points with limited characters from the single player campaign. There isn't no storyline to follow or create a character to set yourself apart. There is a level creator which is interesting, but multiplayer is nevertheless boring that it does not matter. You'll end up being bored of multiplayer in 5 minutes, so I wouldn't bother with multiplayer unless you're entertain easily.

The graphics in Band of Bugs resembles something from the Super Nintendo. There is nothing really spectacular, no cool animations, nada,,, I'm probably being a bit harsh considering this is a Xbox Live Arcade game, but it's no eye candy. The controls are pretty simple were even an infant can understand. There are only two sound tracks; the opening menu, and in-game music. There is no voice dialog, but gibberish like in 'The Sims'.

Overall Band of Bugs is a decent Xbox Live Arcade title that just missed out in the multiplayer goodness. If you want to take a chance, and enjoy single player games then this is worth the 800 points. If you want to have a fun time with multiplayer then you can live without this game.
