It seems like everybody is trying to knock off “Grand Theft Auto” nowadays and hey , this game is no different. It only makes sense, especially when GTA is basically its own special genre now, why not expand the genre? Crimelife is trying to do the open-ended gang on gang crime thing just like GTA has. It seems like you are in tighter areas such as space, and how much room you have to work with when fighting in Crimelife than you would in GTA normally.

In the game you are Tre, and you must rise up the ranks of your gang and eventually you will end up becoming the leader. Until then, Tre’s cousin is the leader of the gang. You must carry out orders and do missions for your gang, mostly against rival gangs as you progress through the story. What I played was basically me walking around beating other gang members to death, in no particular fashion or style. Blood and guts spewed all over the place of course. There really isn’t much known about the title in terms of how it will differ from GTA, but at this point it feels more like a button smashing dungeon crawler than a actual “true to streets” videogame.

I don’t know why Konami is making the game like they are. Is making a brawler were you mash random buttons with unresponsive controls the way to make a GTA competitor in their mind? I tried to keep playing the game, but at the point the game is at, it just isn’t fun. I know the game still has some time in development, and the build I played may have just been glitchy, but this isn’t a title coming out in two years or even a year, it is coming out this fall. The one good thing about this, is Eminem’s rap gang, D12 is doing the music for the title to give it some edge, so hopefully the soundtrack turns out sounding good.

You aren’t going to hear much about this title even after it is released. Mostly because of the lackluster feel, look, performance, and how generic the game feels. I don’t like to call games out before I completely play them through, but if when we get around to reviewing the game when it is released if we score it low, don’t say I didn’t tell you so.
