Good: 48 individual character stories! Guitar solos actually pretty cool!
Bad: Still a bit repetitive...

Dynasty Warriors 5
Koei has returned yet again with another installment into the Dynasty Warriors franchise with DW5. Now with 48 completely different stories, find out why this is by far the best Dynasty Warriors game ever.

The Dynasty Warriors game franchise has quickly become one of the most recognizable “series” of games ever since it’s first major hit of Dynasty Warriors 2 on PlayStation 2. There have since been a countless number of games following…let’s recap: Dynasty Warriors, Dynasty Warriors 2, Dynasty Warriors 3, Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends, Dynasty Warriors 4, Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends, Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires, not to mention a failed spin off series called Samurai Warriors and Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends…and now finally…Dynasty Warriors 5. That’s a lot! Anyway, surely by DW5 one would think that the gameplay has evolved so much and become a truly great game to make it this far…well, no and yes…allow me to explain:

Story
Is there even a story to Dynasty Warriors? Is there reason and sense behind the massive amounts bodies being ripped to shreds and blasted across the ground? Yes! In fact, there is a great story behind Dynasty Warriors, and for DW5’s sake, it is probably the best part of the whole game. The truly, 100%, basic story behind Dynasty Warriors tells the true tale of the fall of the Han Empire and the rise of the Three Kingdoms all in ancient China. After the Han falls, a great strategist name Zhuge Liang devises the “Three Kingdoms” strategy and after a manner of certain events and battles, China is divided into three main sections, all vying to rule the land. This is the same exact story that has followed through on every single Dynasty Warriors game thus far and of course continues into DW5. However, it is played out much deeper this time around by instead of just following each kingdom’s story, you now will follow stories of each and every character, each having a different tale to tell. There are 48 characters overall…that’s 48 individual stories! Each character though does follow the same basic pattern of storytelling by narrating in-between battles on their thoughts and feelings about the previous battle or the upcoming battle. This is where you can really pick out a favorite character now. Instead of relying on a character having cool fighting moves…now your character can have a cool story to go with.

Gameplay
There is really only one simple way to play any Dynasty Warriors game and, for the most part, win: button mashing! Well, to a degree you will find yourself mashing down the “X” and the “Y” buttons quite a lot, as they are your two main forms of attack. “X” is the normal swing of the weapon you carry and “Y” is a special charge attack, which will either use your weapon in a special way or you will use some sort of magic attack, depending on your character. Though it doesn’t really matter in the end, there is room for all kinds of crazy combos you can perform to help boost your points at the end of battles. The best way to pull those off is to hit “Y” after you press “X” to perform a secondary set of special techniques. For example: hitting “X,X,X,Y” usually, for most characters, makes them perform a “crowd clearing” attack which is just like it sounds…it clears out crowds of enemies as it is always quite effective. You can only swing up to 6 times with your weapon, which includes the special “Y” attack so the most powerful charge attack you can do is after pressing “X” five times and then pressing “Y”. New to DW5 however, when you gain certain weapons for characters, those weapons will have special abilities that allow the user to swing the weapon in succession of up to 9 total times and being invincible in the process!
