Jeremy Soule Interview
Another exciting interview from one of the composers of the PLAY! videogame symphony. His music from Morrowind and Oblivion and featured in the concert and we talk to him about how the Oblivion soundtrack came to be, and more.

by:
May 29, 2006

XE: What are your inspirations?

Jeremy: The interesting thing about PLAY! is here I am with the living, breathing reasons as to why I got into videogame music are here. Koji Kondo Nobuo Uematsu, and so on, it’s amazing. It is pretty surreal.

XE:How does it feel having your music played at a concert?

Jeremy: Well, it’s always an amazing experience, first time I heard my music played in the States was at the Dorothy-Chandler Pavilion to honor Frank Gary at the Disney Hall and I closed the first half with a song called Les Stas which is based on a poem by Victor Hugo, which is dedicated to the videogame industry. “When I look upon a starry night” is the rought English translation, and I heard the soprano and I looked at the 150 musicians with about 100 quires and it was just otherworldly.

XE: When doing the Oblivion soundtrack how did you approach it differently from Morrowind?

Jeremy: Well I went through a life changing event to write Oblivion, I actually had a strong gust of wind and heavy rain having me roll over several times in my vehicle and I thought that was a near death experience—

Where was this at?

Just south of the border and it was late one night and I was driving back from my studio and I remember seeing headlights from the north bound lane coming towards me and I couldn’t avoid them, fortunately nobody was hurt. I went through the glass and that was about it and having rolled over and lived through that I realized there was more to life than meets the eye and I’m really happy to be here. That was about 1/3 into Oblivion and that really changed a lot of my outlook on how I would approach the music. It put a lot of emotion into the music so I’m really proud of what I did for Oblivion and we really know that the game really connected with people so that’s the story behind the story.

Wow.

I think when I told Todd Howard the main game designer I got in an accident he was kind of in shock he asked if I was ok and I said yeah, so he said, “So how is the schedule?” (Laughs)

XE: So why are they only playing the Oblivion music at the Chicago showing?

Jeremy: Well I think they are only playing it here because Oblivion was sort of a last minute thing but I’m sure they might try to fit it into future showings if it goes over well here. They will play the opening Oblivion theme following another piece which is my personal favorite but we will leave that to be a surprise.

XE: What other projects are you working on right now?

Jeremy: Working on a few projects right now, particularly for the Xbox 360 I am real excited about Prey and Prey features a three-hour score, Prey is done and it is one of my largest scores to date. Completely different style than Oblivion, but very satisfying to work on it. I am working on several other titles such as Guild Wars: Factions, Company of Heroes is an upcoming RTS, working on Christ Taylor’s next RTS called Supreme Commander, so I have a number of games in the works and pretty excited about the lineup.
