Ubisoft, the maker of top selling action games like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell are now taking a totally different direction with Enchanted Arms. This is the first Japanese RPG that Ubisoft will be publishing and the first Japanese RPG that the Xbox 360 will be getting in America. For those who don’t know already, this title has already been release in Japan earlier this year and has now already finish being dubbed into the English Language. So not only will the storyline, game play etc…, will be important, we will also be hearing how the voice actors will fit into the game when it comes out here in America in late August. If you have not notice already by watching the anime that comes out here in America, the voice actors are crucially important because it can ruin a show and in this case a game entirely. Hopefully this won’t be an issue so we the gamers can experience the dramatic story telling we’ve been urging for the past 6 years on the Xbox and now Xbox 360.
Now the storyline of Enchanted Arms starts off with a 1000 year war, were the Golems (monsters of the world) wanted to destroy the world the people live in. The creators of the Golems were the people who wanted the Golems to do their dirty work in the war. This war was later to be called the “Golem Wars” after the humans who created them, could not control them and went radical. Ironically nobody knows how this war became to be or if it ever ended. After 100 years when the world was at peace the Golems started to appear and learn magic called “Enchantment”. Now there are Golems who want to dig further into this magic called “Enchantment” and start a new war from 100 years ago. The storyline for Enchanted Arms is interesting but none the less confusing to a certain extent. Hopefully this will be cleared up when we play the game and see how it is told. Now every story needs to have characters and there seem to be several.
The main character is Atsuma A.K.A “Burning Atsuma” because he is a Fire Enchanter. He gains his Fire element power from his right arm but does not know how to utilize it till later in the game. His knowledge of Enchantment is little and going to magic school does not seem to be helping him either. He is none the less the hero/main character in this story and will undoubtedly be the strongest character in the game later on.
The next is a spunky little Cowgirl who only cares about the green dollar bills (money) she gets. Her name is Yuki A.K.A "King of the Golem Hunters". With her golden revolver, she hunts down Golems all over the world for what else…money. She has a tough time admitting when she needs help and is stubborn to the bone when she does not get what she wants. Of course Atsuma is there to hopefully change her heart and they’ll possibly be an item at the end.
The last is a person is called Touya who is Atsuma’s Friend. There is not much background on him except that he specializes a lot in magic attacks and is naturally gifted with Enchantment.
There are several more characters you’ll definitely meet within the game but these are three main ones.
How to use them in battle is something left to be seen because it’s different from your regular RPG turn base style everyone is use to. There is a weird grid base system where you can setup your characters to battle (something like the battleship the board game). You got two options before you battle were you can let the computer battle for you which will make the battles go faster. Another way is doing the slow poke manual way which will probably be the best option. Honestly, I don’t know why you will let the cpu do the battling for you because that will take away all the fun and disconnect you from the character. There is also an creature that will support you in battle. There are in total 75 creatures that you can unlock with there own special ability. This will probably be similar to a mog in Phantasy Star Online that travels with you by your side. The options in battle are unknown because they are written in Japanese, so the rest of the battle system and what each character can do is left up to question. On a side note, you can also take your character on Xbox Live to fight in a One on One match but don’t except it to be filled up that much with the majority of RPG Gamers is only concern with the single player aspect. Still this gives this game even more replay value with the mini missions/games pack along with it.
I have not done the research on how well this game is selling in Japan but how bad the Xbox 360 is doing there…probably not to good. Still, I do believe that this game has the potential to reach Final Fantasy 7 proportions given it’s potential but the community doesn’t seems to acknowledge this game to well. This game can very much be a sleeper hit like Phantom Dust but hopefully it can get the recognition it deserves. When Enchanted Arms does come out, you can expect we here at Xbox Evolved to take a further look with our Review.
