FIFA Soccer 10 Review
It's that time of year again. EA has churned out another FIFA, but is it actually any good?

by: Michael Ogunnubi
October 31, 2009

The foundations of every new sports game and what has improved in the the gameplay department are usually the first things people wonder about to warrant a new purchase for technically the same game. With EA and their sports franchises, they have started to slide away from gimmicky, little-impact improvements and instead improve in boatloads like the opposition AI and making general gameplay more fluid. This was very well done in FIFA 09 and further steps have been made in FIFA 10 to make the matches more realistic. For example, referees now give bookings in real-time, rather than in a separate cutscene, and quick free-kicks can also be taken.

FIFA 10 introduces 360 Degree Dribbling. For those that don't know, all previous soccer (or football outside of the USA) games in existence have used a standard 8-axis directional system meaning, you could only move north, south, east, west and the diagonals in between these values. Now, in FIFA 10, you can move, supposedly, to within a degree of wherever you point your Analog Stick. Suffice to say, this isn't completely successful, because even though 360 Dribbling does add a few more directions, it certainly isn't 360 degrees. What's more, the control system now feels a bit clunky, especially compared to FIFA 09.

Manger Mode is the head honcho of the FIFA series - always present, always improved upon, and the first place that many people go to upon getting the game. Manager Mode is a healthy blend of standard FIFA matches mixed with a touch of Simulation and Tactics - think of this part as Football Manager lite. And, as always, EA have added a few improvements to Manager Mode in FIFA 10. More than 50 major improvements were designed to create an authentic experience to mimic the real-world game. Player Transfers are determined by multiple decision points, including club finance and prestige, availability of similar players, and competition from A_-controlled clubs.

Now, there’s a slight problem; the Assistant Manager is utterly, completely broken. When EA tells you that he'll "rotate your team", they neglect to mention that this rotation is comparable to Rafa Benitez in his rookie Premier League days. Different players will be played every match, and what's more, they'll be in whacky positions - left-backs playing at center-back, center-backs playing at left-midfield, etc. Luckily, the Assistant Manager can be turned off. Unfortunately for the opposite team it cannot be turned off, leaving them with pitiful starting line-ups.

Although the Assistant is prone to error, he does often let squads slip through his grasp and consequently they often look as they should do. This glitch would be bearable, maybe even not that noticeable, were it not just the paramount of Manager Mode glitches in FIFA 10. Boards sacking you after one loss, teams finishing in Champions League spots not qualifying, and finally, to add insult to injury, almost every match (including Premier League matches) is played at night, in the rain. Just to make this particular glitch worse, EA decided to remove the option to change the match-day weather this year. The really irritating thing about this "nighttime + rainy" glitch is that either EA's QA team is absolutely out of it or they noticed the bug but thought "Ah, well" and left it in.
