Fairytale Fights Review
Blood, Fairytales…Salami? Fairytale Fights is one out of this world game that will have you wondering, just what the heck is going on.

by: Michael Ogunnubi
November 05, 2009

Fairytale Fights takes some of the most famous and well known Fairytale Characters like Little Red Riding Hood or Snow White and turns them into blood quenching little rascals. In all you've got Little Red, Snow White, Beanstalk Jack, and the Naked Emperor to take control of while slashing your way through and tearing up the fairytale kingdom. What’s unique about this game is that these are not the same fairytales you grew up with nor is it anyway for kids. Fairytale Fights is like fairytales for crazed adults. In the game, you will choose one of those four characters to try and save a fantasy world, Taleville, from certain doom. Only in this tale, you won’t be saving the world by teaming up and getting lucky defeating the all big bad meanie. Instead you'll be wielding weapons and beating enemies to a bloody pulp. Luckily, many different weapons lay around in this fairytale world, which you can use to shoot and carve up enemies.

The story behind Fairytale Fights is that the four main characters have prospered for way too long and lost their fame and fortune in fairytale history to newer and more likable characters. So you take the shoes of one of them and travel across Taleville battling foes and saving the world from an untimely doom against Lumberjacks and insanely huge beavers…yes, beavers. I’ll say though, you probably won’t be the overly interested in the story nor will you even care to be. There are no actual voice overs in this game nor is there any real dialog to read. You main quest can simply be started with the push of a button and on-ward you go.

You start the game off in a peaceful part of Taleville where you see all the townsfolk going on about their business; this is your home base, so to say. You can go off and wander about the city then start the quest, or you can simply hit the start button and choose a quest to play. The first quest will have you going against a bunch of lumberjacks and a couple of beavers to save the town.

The main pitch for this game is the fact that it is insanely violent, bloody with over the top non-stop action. Foes are sliced and diced in real-time, thanks to Playlogic’s in-house Dynamic Slicing technology…go figure. Instead of using preset animations, players have the ability to slice up an enemy in any way they like by using the right analog stick. Apart from this cutting edge technology, the game will also use the tested powers of the Unreal 3 engine. Although you can pull off some cool combos depending on directional inputs you command, it’s still just a straight-forward button masher – or in this case, an analog…wiggler?

The game can be played cooperatively with up to 3 other players online or even offline. Co-op is definitely the way to go for this game because alone, it can get insanely boring. Most of my enjoyment came from playing the game online and having random people jumping in completing the quests with me.

One weird thing about this game is that there is no real way to save your progress during quests. So you can’t just quit out in the middle of one then return later where you left off; you must complete it in one sit down which I found to be really lame and frustrating. Another thing is that if you hook up with players online who I suppose have beaten the game, all of the chapters unlock for you as soon as they join. With that, it’s hard to tell how much you have actually progressed and/or where you left off.

There is some humor in this game which I found to be quite funny and enjoyable and playing the game cooperatively on LIVE just made the experience that much better. Overall though, Fairytale Fights is a pretty simple game. There are no RPG aspects to the game, but they aren't necessary. The game is simple and requires no real skill to master. This could have easily been a downloadable kind of a game for like Xbox LIVE Arcade. I think most gamers just looking for a simple, fun kind of game will enjoy it somewhat. The fact that this MSRPs for $59.99 is just silly though.
