Fallout 3 Broken Steel Review
Enter post-apocalyptic D.C. once again as we review the next Xbox 360 exclusive expansion pack for Fallout 3.

by: Noah Hess
May 12, 2009

Following closely behind Operation: Anchorage and The Pit, Broken Steel is the third exclusive expansion to hit the xbox live marketplace since the release of Fallout 3 last year. Broken Steel brings a lot to the table and will really make you want to roam the wastelands of D.C. once again.

First lets list everything you get in the download:

  • New enemies

  • New NPC's

  • Several new encounters

  • New Armor and Weapons (including the Tesla Cannon)

  • New Items (Aqua Pura for example)

  • 6 new locations

  • 14 new perks with level cap raised to 30

  • 3 new main quests with achievements

  • 3 new side quests

  • 3 unmarked quests

You may think that only three missions for 800 MS Points ($10) isn't enough, though the fact that you get to continue on with your character after beating the game is really awesome. I had previously just decided to go and make another character to do all the side quests, though now I don't have to worry about leveling up a new person and can continue with my original. Was able to play new quests, get new perks and raise my level above 20. The new armors and weapons are a cool addition too (though expected). The new weapons like the Tesla Cannon are also pretty beastly; you will have a lot of fun using it. It is basically a giant laser that when in use you have to yell “i'm chargin my laza”. It destroys wastelanders very quickly.

The main quest line of broken steel takes place two weeks after the end of the game and revolves around the Brotherhood of Steel taking out what’s left of the Enclave. You get to fight along side Liberty Prime again and do side quests involving the purified water from Project Purity. The cool thing about that is, what you choose at the end of the game will change certain aspects of the world when you play Broken Steel. The expansion adds new areas to the game like Adam's Airforce Base and Olney Powerworks. There are three main quests added and while it will only take about five hours to complete, but with some full retail games taking less then that or just a little longer, $10 isn't a bad deal for that much game play. That doesn't even include the side quests, extra encounters, leveling up to 30 and then the fact that you can go back and do any missions you missed out on before.

If you were wanting to download an expansion for Fallout and couldn't decide which one to get, I would highly recommend going with Broken Steel now and maybe waiting for the expansion disc that is coming out with The Pit and Operation: Anchorage. While you can't play Broken Steel if you haven't beaten the game, it still adds the extra perks and levels as soon as you download it. Broken Steel for is well worth the price. If you haven't played Fallout 3 in awhile or just need something new on the game, you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Fallout has been out for about seven months now and I’m sure there are those of you that have played through the game 100% and those of you that have played through the story and haven't gone back to the game. With the Broken Steel expansion both parties will have a reason to go back and slay more wastelanders.

Make sure you check out our full review of the original retail Fallout 3 here.

For ten bucks you really can't beat all the gameplay and replay value this will add to your game. Well worth it for the price.
