Hollywood has portrayed the Wild West in a fashionable manner. With movies like Once Upon A Time In the West, Unforgiven, High Noon, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and the whole “Man Without a Name” movies, the Western genre is full of classics. Now it’s time for the video game industry to take this dead genre and try to revive it. Last year’s Red Dead Revolver proved to be more of a mixture of crazy antics that included midgets rather than pure Wild West fun. Dead Man’s Hand was too choppy and the online experience was dull. There have been other Western video games but none of them recently have made an impression. Would GUN provide players with non-stop action with riveting gun-slinging?
GUN is true to the western formula as the storyline is quite predictable. You are of course out for vengeance as you have lost a loved one. Your dad isn’t really you dad and priests really aren’t priests. The world is upside down and things are only going to get worse before they get better. You play as Colton White, a young man trying to find his roots and his purpose in life pretty much. While he isn’t the angry teen with pent up aggression (think Anakin Skywalker), he’s more of the chilled out man who just needs to find his way in life.
Missions are accepted via the Grand Theft Auto influenced system. You find the contact; you talk to them, and then accept the mission. For the most part, the game is open-ended. You can roam the levels partaking in side-missions and mini-games. Side-missions vary from delivering messages for the Pony Express to mining for gold. Mini-games are western influenced of course and will have you playing poker before the end of the day.
GUN isn’t that long of a game. You can beat it within one day of sitting if you are that dedicated as a gamer. There is no replay value beyond the first play through. Even though the first play through is enjoyable, GUN needs multiplayer to keep it alive and kicking. Maybe Co-op could have been included. Better yet, why not let the gamers duel it out with their friends in a shootout? If they do indeed make a sequel, let’s hope they make multiplayer a huge factor.
The audio is top notch if I say so myself. Colton White is voiced by none other than ‘The Punisher’ himself. That’s right; Thomas Jane throws on an accent and delivers quality all around. Kris Kristofferson represents his character in a great manner even though he isn’t in too many scenes if you know what I mean. Brad Dourif, the maniac who voices Chucky the violent doll, has arguably the best part in the video game as Josiah Reed. Honest Tom is none other than Frank Collison, who is more of a supporting character in Hollywood movies such as the The Village. Now I must report that the best voice in the entire game is none other than… wait for it… wait for it… RON PEARLMAN. He lends his voice for Mayor Hoodoo Brown and he couldn’t represent the character any better. If you don’t know who Ron Pearlman is, shame on you. Go watch Hellboy now!
Graphics are not half bad. I never encountered a frame rate problem whatsoever. The levels are big but I regret to inform you that you’ll be running into the invisible walls sooner or later on your tracking through the desert. You won’t go tracking by foot either unless you want to take the long route. You can jump on a horse and ride it anywhere’s you want to pretty much. I am a sucker for horses so I love riding that horse to the moon and beyond in GUN.
With everything put together, GUN isn’t half bad. The storyline grows stale by the end of the game but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. The graphics aren’t unbelievably beautiful but they serve their purpose with delivering enough to do the game justice. The audio is the best part of GUN and Hollywood producers could easily put this voice cast together to make a movie if they wanted to. If you want to saddle up and play a western game, I advise you to pick up GUN.

Don't let this score scare you. It's a great purchase. It won't be a game all your friends will enjoy watching you play since there is no multiplayer. What I recommend doing is playing it all the way through and then lend it to your friends if they want to play. That's the only way they'll be able to play. GUN is fun and enjoyable while it lasts.
