Gears of War 2 Review
All the right elements are in place in this sequel to the popular third-person shooter that again pits Delta Squad against the Locust Horde: gorgeous visuals, intense action, cheeky humor and it's all incredibly fun.

Ever since the exciting debut of Gears of War, we have all waited for even more curb-stomping, locust sawing action. Well, it's finally here and it is literally bigger, badder and definitely more badass. Everyone’s expectations were high and many were left wondering how the sequel could raise the bar. To say the least, it improved on its weaknesses, but fell a bit short in its strongest parts. You definitely won't be disappointed with this title, but past Gears’ fans will feel that something has changed drastically with this sequel.

The first game had a lacking storyline but the same can't be said for Gears of War 2, even though the objective is the same as the original Gears in destroying the locust stronghold. It expands itself with several sub-plots like learning more about Dom's girlfriend Maria, meeting the Locust Queen, learning more about Marcus and coming across new characters as the story traverses. Still, the main casts of characters are back, including my main man Cole Train! Every single moment Cole Train was on the screen was the equivalent of having two of Chuck Norris at the same time.

The Team is Back!

The campaign itself has doubled in size and depth when compared to the first game. It can feel a bit stretched out at some moments, but afterwards it’s filled in with an epic moment that is sketched out in your mind for ages. Whether it be riding huge machine cars, or literally killing hundreds of Locust on screen, there are a lot of memories to be made here. The action never stops and gives you a new hurdle to overcome. Your new main nemesis is a Locust named Skorge but you’re also met with other bosses in the game. Skorge is probably the most underwhelming boss in existence since all he does is run away. You see him throughout the game making Marcus's life a bit more challenging. The ending for him was disappointing considering you should had been allowed to chainsaw him up in a satisfying way. The same can be said for the ending but it leaves enough room to hint at Gears of War 3. Similar to any action movie like Rush Hour or Lethal Weapon, they always leave room for a sequel.

Something that was heavily debated within the Gears of War community was if GoW2 would look visually superior to its predecessor. For the most part, it’s virtually identical to the first and even brings back some of its predecessor’s issues, such as texture load issues, occasional pop-up and it still suffers from the occasional black hole effect that results in two or more objects being meshed together. There is also a blur effect when aiming that can seem like a lack of depth perception. It is a new system added into the Unreal Engine and it can be bothersome when aiming. Arguably, Gears 2 is just bigger, with more on screen than the first and a little extra refinement here and there. That’s not to say Gears 2 is ugly, as the entire franchise is still arguably one of the best looking games this generation. But, if you’re looking to be blown away again or are expecting an entirely new graphics engine you’ll be disappointed.
