It is no secret that Halo 3: Recon, an upcoming title based on the events on earth in Halo 2 leading up to Halo 3. The game is a departure for the series putting you in the shoes of an Orbital Dropship Trooper (ODST).
The origins of Halo 3: Recon can be traced from a cut scene axed from Halo 2 (later released on the retail Halo 2 Map pack disc) of a group of ODST and their struggle against the deadly Covenant invading Earth. The game will be released fall of 2009, and because of the lower price, and an article in the latest Game Informer focusing on the game, it assumed that the game will be $40 or less when it finally hits retail.
However, thanks to the recently updated NXE with a bigger focus on bigger downloadable games, and storage solutions getting cheaper every year for the Xbox 360, the game will probably find it’s way to the Xbox Live Marketplace as well. The incentive for buying the game as a download will be that it will cost a little less than buying it at retail, however the incentive of buying it at retail besides having a physical copy of the game will be some extra goodies packed in with the game. This isn’t the first time a popular first-person shooter has had spin-off games, or games that expand upon the story. Most notably, Valve Software’s Half-Life 2 has seen two different story expansions, with a third one coming to PC and Xbox 360 later next year. Half-Life 2 Episode 3 may also be sold as DLC on Xbox Live Marketplace. Recently Portal: Still Alive was released exclusively to Xbox Live Arcade.
The first game to follow this model however will be Grand Theft Auto IV. The exclusive downloadable content was delayed until sometime early next year, but it will be more than just a few simple missions, but rather more of a full expansion. An interesting note from the source of this information is that while the downloadable version of the GTAIV content will be exclusive to Xbox 360, the retail version will probably be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but at a later date.
The source used for this information has a history of being “off” on some things (such as an Xbox 360 price drop in late 2007 which we reported back then) but right on others (such as Rareware’s Goldeneye 007 originally intended for release on XBLA) but stresses that none of this would even be possible if not for the NXE update on Xbox 360. We do not believe that all the information leaked to us, especially GTAIV content coming to PlayStation 3 at retail is true, whoever this is from our source completely unedited.
We will have more if and when this story develops.
