Heroes of the Pacific
Finally we get a World War II game that doesn’t consist of you controlling a squadron of ground-troops, or snipe out Nazi. As you will find in our review, this game focuses exclusively on the fight in the Pacific.

When I was getting ready to play this aerial-shooter, I first thought about the outstanding flying-shoot’em-up Crimson Skies. The game is set during World War II and focuses specifically on the conflict held in the Pacific with the Japanese, and suffice to say it plays nothing like Crimson Skies. Suffice to say, the game does a good job of giving you a lot of what players want—a game that stays pretty accurate, yet the plans aren’t to hard to manage.

The main campaign starts you off in Pearl Harbor. The first thing you have to learn is how to take off, and with a little trial and error, it eventually becomes a breeze, and an obvious gesture. The actual flying means, you have to remember that you are only limited to your hardware so right off the bat you shouldn’t really be trying any sort of complicated maneuvers as it might do you more bad than good, stalling out your engine ultimately sending you crashing. Then from there you go further towards Japan, hopping island to island. Specifically Midway is one of the more notable battles and the game for the most part stays accurate with everything. Along the way you can upgrade your current plane, buy new and more powerful ones or may have to go from a dog-fighting type plan to a stealthier, bomb-dropping plane. You will be given objectives to bomb when you go into this mode and for the most part it is easier than you would expect. The only annoyance about the game is getting used to the fact that with your machine guns, you won’t have any sort of auto-target, relying on when the cursor turns red, or second guessing when and where the plan will be going when you are playing. When you are launching missiles thought for example, the game gives a little bit more leeway, allowing the missiles to lock on. Overall the campaign is pretty lengthy, and some people might be yearning for the end, especially since some parts in the game can get pretty stale.

There are other modes that you may find more interesting than the campaign though, such as the multiplayer, which you can have with up to two players on one console or you can go the online route with Xbox Live, assuming there are actually people on to play the game. There are dogfights, king of the hill, and capture the flag type of objectives here. The games can be team or single person based, and they do actually add a nice amount of replay to the game. You might want to go through the entire campaign mode first though as you unlock a lot of other planes that will better serve you in multiplayer.

Visually the game looks pretty good, with the style looking sort of glum at times, but still fitting in with the whole clichéd World War II look. The loading screens and menus especially go with that humorous show-boating visual style of the pilots in the era. The sound in the game is as solid as it will get with engines sounding different on the varying planes, and the sounds of bombs and ammo flying all around you. Still, the game could use a bit more work in not being so repetitive but suffice to say it gets the job done.

Heroes of the Pacific might be up your alley if you really love the history of World War II but you are getting tired of all the World War II shooters out there. I would definitely try before you buy, but who knows? You might find something that you are extremely addicted to with this aerial dog fighting WWII arena.
