Mega Man 9 Review
Mega Man makes his first appearance on the 360 and he's gone retro. Read our review and decide if you think it is worth the purchase.

October 20, 2008

The blue bomber is back in the first numbered Mega Man game in twelve years and returns to his roots. For Mega Man’s return, Capcom has decided to go old school and make the entire game look and feel like the original NES games.

The graphics in this game are exactly what you would expect from an 8-bit game, nothing extraordinary at all. The game has taken a step back from not just the previous Mega Man titles, but all 2D side scrolling games in the past decade. While I understand Capcom was bringing Mega Man back to his Nintendo Entertainment System roots, they could have made the gameplay just as good but had more of an updated look. If you are a fan of NES games and love the nostalgia feeling, the graphics will be just fine for you, but nobody is going to be impressed by the looks of this game at all. It would have been interesting to see them do something like Bionic Commando Rearmed had done visually, or even just some really good 2D animations. What is even more questionable, depending on how you look at it is the developers even put in glitches and bugs that you would see from the old games. One of them, sprite flicker is when you have to many characters on the screen and one of them fades in and out. This is thankfully an option though for people who want to enjoy the punishment they had back in their days as a child.

The gameplay is the same as previous iterations in this series; take out eight robot masters after finally getting through their insanely tough levels and gain their weapons. The only difference from later games in the series is 9’s lack of a power slide or charge up shot. The difficulty however remains intact, especially after gamers have gotten so used to the games available now having somewhat easier more forgiving difficulties. You will be playing each level repeatedly until you learn every little detail you need to know to get through almost unharmed (or until you get pissed off and stop playing due to frustration). If you are a fan of the series you will not have a problem with this, but if you are new to the Mega Man games then you may want to take this into consideration.

One awesome aspect of the retro feel is the music. I think everyone can agree that the mega man games have some really spectacular songs and this game is no different. Each level has a great musical piece to go along with it. It would be a real shame if the music sucked considering the amount of time that you will spend on each level.

Fans of the series will probably love this game, though I am not quite so certain new comers will enjoy it to its fullest potential. The game is a great fan service and does a great job of satisfying those that enjoyed the originals. If you are a fan, take the ten-dollar plunge, otherwise I would say go out and buy the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on the original Xbox (backwards compatible) and you will get the same experience and more games for around the same price.

If you are a fan of Mega Man games or even old school games that pose a challenge, Mega Man 9 is the perfect game for you. If you have just started gaming in the past ten years or are a casual gamer you may want consider another alternative.
