I’ve played BOTH PlayStation 2, and Xbox versions of Mortal Kombat Armageddon at E3, I’ve played the game whenever I get the chance, and once with one of our staff members. Why have I paid this much attention to Armageddon? It looks like its half-way finished, and I can easily say: Best Mortal Kombat Yet. I kid you not.
If I were to place Armageddon somewhere, it would be third place next to UMK3, with MKII taking the throne. I had all my thoughts written in a notebook, but I lost it, so I will try to remember how the game feels. I’ll do a rundown category-wise. So, here we go:
Graphics: The graphics are pretty much the same, but I thought the game looked two times better than Deception. There are more details on each character, each render, each background, among other things. Images does not do the game justice. You must see it in person.
Sound: Armageddon, of course has gotten a lot louder, as it has been for each new ‘Kombat game released. I noticed there’s more voices/sounds this time around, than in recent memory.
The Mortal Kombat fan that I am, I can tell you that the gameplay has improved more ways than one.
Lets start off with the controls; while the key configuration has stayed the same, the feel of the movements, the response time has been considerably improved, in fact, it will feel a little tighter and a little faster than Deadly Alliance, and Deception. And for this reason, the gameplay has gotten a little…more intense.
The overall gameplay experience now, is that Midway is really pushing the limits of empathizing the word “fun” Why? Midway pushed the fatality envelope this time around, there are more pitfalls than Deception ever will have. I promise you this; if you enjoyed the “freedom” that Deception gave you, when trying to humiliate your opponents, you will LOVE the hell out of Armageddon. I won’t spoil it for you; but the stages now have more stage fatalities than ANY other Mortal Kombat game to date.
Armageddon is extremely nostalgic when it comes to stages, you will gasp in surprise, some stages return, and have been given a overall makeover. I just hope that Midway doesn’t bank on old stages too much, bring in variety. I want to see what other “twisted” ideas they can come up with when it regards to stages.
At E3, some people seemed to know the fatalities very well…I think they’re going for a automatic feel with character fatalities, much like the stage fatalities. And I didn’t just see “one” type of fatality. I don’t want to give away too much, but you will be able to pull off what I like to call “Combo-ality” …Combos mixed with fatalities, get it? There are some fatalities that allow you to finish the fatality in YOUR own way. I think this is the “custom fatalities” they were talking about.
If you are one of those mis-believers of “60 characters,” you should believe, because pressing the trigger buttons during gameplay will twist the character select box to reveal other characters to unlock. I just hope the final version stays true to what I saw in the demo, its an eye popper if you ask me. I can believe 50 characters in Marvel Vs Capcom because of the fact that 2D titles take up less space, but Mortal Kombat? With the fact that the game is full 3D, more detail, and the complexity of the game itself? I was surprised.
Stay tuned to Xbox Evolved for updates on Armageddon as the release date rears closer and closer. It should release in the fall, so not that long to wait!
