Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe Review
|
|
Mortal Kombat is a series that just doesn’t seem to ever go away due to the constant innovation and work put in by Midway. The franchise has been around for years, and keeps going strong as one of the best choices for fighting fans on any platform.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is probably the most enjoyable Mortal Kombat game I’ve played due to the fact that the new gameplay mechanics make for a very smooth experience, allowing you to pull off combos and get into the depth of the gameplay.
The game sticks to its classic heritage, as it feels much more like an old-school Mortal Kombat fighting game in the way in which you can pick-up-and play it (or sit there and really get into the depth of it).
The pick-up-and-play style is going to appeal to the casual gamers out there, but those hardcore fighting fans are going to love the depth that is unlocked once you get into the move list with the various combos and such that you can pull off to deliver some incredible damage. Unfortunately for me, I am just not that good with the xbox 360’s controller for fighting games and this may come of as a very troublesome situation to some while trying to nail some of the tough combos.
Speaking of incredible damage, do not forget about the fatalities, which have been given not only to the Mortal Kombat characters, but also to the DC fighters added into the game. Speaking of fatalities, bringing DC Universe characters into the mix does change things a bit. While all the Mortal Kombat characters and DC Universe villains can perform fatalities, things are just a little bit different for DC Universe heroes. Instead of fatalities, they perform Heroic Brutalities. While they won’t kill their opponents with Heroic Brutalities, they will give them the beatdown of their lives. This had to be done to keep the DC heroes within the confines of their lore. You wouldn’t expect to see Superman kill someone after all. The fatalities themselves have been watered down quite a bit. They’re much tamer than and not nearly as shocking as they used to be. While one could argue that we as a society have become accustomed to having a much higher tolerance for shock and gore, its simply a case of the fatalities being very mild to keep the ESRB rating as Walmart-friendly as possible. I was a bit nervous when I heard that DC fighters were going to be added in, but the develop did a great job of allowing them to seamlessly join the fighting game without making it seem like a gimmick at all.
The gameplay also does a nice job of tying in with the levels and such where you fight. There is some nice interaction as you can punch enemies through walls, and well as compete in the more classic multi-level areas for fighting.
New to this game is the story mode where you can pick a side as to whether you want to go with the MK or DC characters, and from there you can watch the story unfold. Choosing either storyline will split up the game into multiple chapters. Each of these chapters will have you play as a different character as heroes and villains alike try to get to the bottom of what is going on with their realm and the threat posed by the merging of the universes. As you play the story mode with each realm, you’ll only be able to see a small part of the role in which they play in the overall narrative. Only by completing the story mode with both universes, will you be able to learn the full extent of what’s going on.
With two different endings, it is a lot of fun to play through to say the least.
