Need For Speed: Undercover Review
EA’s former wheel burning champion slowly attempts to return to arcade racing bliss. Should probably take off the handbrake.

by: Dameon White
December 10, 2008

EA’s Need For Speed franchise at one time was all that was videogame arcade racing. Gamers itching to get behind the digital wheel to control some of the world’s fastest and most exotic racing cars in an exhibition of D-Pad (or Thumbstick) precision for ultimate living room bragging rights needed to look no further than the NFS series. The glory days ended quite some time ago unfortunately and since then Burnout and Midnight Club have reigned supreme while EA sat on the side of the road waiting for AAA.

In the past few iterations of NFS games they’ve attempted everything from being Too Fast & Too Furious (albeit with the handbrake in the on position and with no fuel in the tank) to street racing and various other forms of market advertising nonsense. While not as apparent to most, NFS went to way of several other failed franchises from the house that EA built as they attempted to copy and clone their way into videogame supremacy. This shift ultimately led to the downfall of the NFS series and a spawn of subpar racing games with horrible…well, everything.

NFS: Undercover is yet another title that sort of follows the now famous EA tradition of attempting to be everything for everyone, but this entry into the series also brings back a little bit of Need For Speed from the old days – fast racing, tight handling cars, lots of bad ass cops and a ton of sexy rides. While it’s not the returning to glory of games, it’s at least a step in the right direction and one that hopefully eventually sees this once renowned series return to its heyday.

Much like all Need For Speed games, the game features a hefty serving of fast and exotic rides; everything from Mazda RX8’s to Lamborghini’s and my personal all-time favorite, the McLaren F1. Sorry sim fans, but there’s no room for your tweaked Ford Fiesta in this game. All in all, there is a hefty serving of cars to choose from. Each vehicle can also be customized to your hearts desire with body kits, rims, performance parts, paint, decals and more and the awesome Autosculpt feature makes a return sans the performance increase (just cosmetic this time around).
