OneChanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad Review
Sex sells no doubt, but his this bikini slayer scandalous enough to warrant your money yet alone your TIME?

The answer to that question…is completely opinionated. I found that, with this game, it's either you like it from the very start or you don’t and want to get rid of the game ASAP. OneChanbara Bikini Samurai Squad is in no way a new game. Instead, it’s a 2+ year old hack-n-slash video port from Japan, where the game was released on December 14, 2006. Unfortunately, the game’s age shows in this outdated port. The graphics are less than stellar for an Xbox 360 game this day and age. It’s quite clear this was nothing more than a port too as, the Japanese voice-overs were kept with no other language and just added subbed captions. If your thinking about picking this up solely on the fact of seeing some skin, don’t; that isn’t even worth the time.

This game is a sequel, so depending on whether or not you played the previous games, you’ll know a lot about the story or start anew. In Bikini Samurai Squad, the story centers upon three characters with two main ones. Aya is the lead character with a family bloodline cursed to have a tendency of sending her into berserk frenzies. Her skills revolve around edged weapons, from swords to throwing knives, and certain attacks can damage or kill multiple enemies at close range. She’s the reason you probably bought this game…yes, I’m looking at you hormone raging gamers. She goes through the whole game in a bikini but can also be customized to your liking. Saki (Aya’s younger sister) regains control of herself after the defeat of Reiko in previous games and the two sisters return to a somewhat more normal life. As to expect, the peace doesn’t last long as once again, Tokyo is infested with zombies, and the cursed bloodline of the two sisters is set to clash once again with their own fates.

*This game has a sequel which continues the story of this game on the Nintendo Wii with OneChanbara Bikini Zombie Slayers. If your interested in continuing the story and own a wii, check out the continuation in Nintendo Now’s review by Marlon Esmeralda.

The controls are pretty simple, left stick moves your character, right stick to move the very annoying camera (which I will get into later on), X to slash, Y to kick, A to jump, all the expected controls. Using Right Trigger, you can switch on the fly between characters. There are even some special moves using a combo of moves like X+A for Aya’s Ecstasy Attack. Now moving on to the camera; this will possibly be the most ANNOYING thing second to trying to figure out just where the hell you are supposed to go. The camera can be recentered by clicking the right stick which helps but at times you’ll just be slashing away and unseen targets.

The game offers a multiple number of game modes from the Story mode, which spans 20 chapters on 5 difficulty levels, free play, survival, practice, quest, dress up, and view where you can view character models after completing the game. Story mode can be cooperatively played with a second controller. There is no online Xbox Live support though.

The combat can be enjoyable for a good while and might ware off on you if your not liking the game a whole lot. There are actually some features I thought were pretty cool like the Gore Meter. The Gore Meter tells you how bloody your sword is and the more blood that gets on the sword, the more dull your sword becomes until ultimately, it becomes useless unless the blood is cleaned off with the press of LB. Rampage mode is also pretty neat which activates when the picture of your character fills with red. Rampage mode makes you much stronger but at a cost of your vitality which drains periodically.

This game, again, will be something you either like or you don’t. If you’re a fan of Koei’s Warrior titles and games of that essence, you’ll find yourself right at home with this one. If not, I would not even recommend a rent, especially if your just looking for some quick achievements, as it’s a very tedious task. The awful camera, outdated graphics and the repetitive gameplay bring down this game with a giant magnitude and doesn’t warrant your time or money, even at the lower $39.99 MSRP.
