The Outfit
The Outfit isn't your typical game. It meshes many game genres into one giant that it may feel a little out of place. Read on to find about the redeeming factors in our new review!

by: Dakota Grabowski
March 29, 2006

The Outfit is a game that’s hard to place. Its part RTS, part 3rd person shooter, and a whole lot of mayhem. If it had a middle name, it would obviously be “Destruction”. That’s why when I finally was able to get my hands on the retail version of the Outfit - I still think there is something missing from the final product to deliver and all around game.

I wrote my preview on The Outfit about twenty days back talking about how much potential it had. I even threw in my own two cents on what The Outfit reminded me of. It contained so many elements of different genres; I just had to throw in my perspective on whether it would turn out to be a mess. For those who missed out on my preview, here’s the equation of what I thought The Outfit resembled.

Battlefield + Full Spectrum Warrior + Mercenaries + Command & Conquer = The Outfit.

Sgt. Thomas MacIntyre reporting for duty.

Storyline wise, you are placed once again in the dead water of WW2. Once again facing off against the Nazis, it seems this is the standard plot for 1 out of every 3 games nowadays. You’ll have the liberty to take control of three soldiers: Captain Deuce Williams, Sergeant Thomas MacIntyre and Lieutenant John Davis Tyler. Each of them has their own perks; Williams hauls around a bazooka, MacIntyre has everyone’s favorite flamethrower, and Tyler is touted with a sniper rifle. Besides their weapons and looks, the characters are exactly the same. None of them can run faster, jump higher or throw a grenade farther. The limit of their diversity starts with the weapons and ends there.

The control and feel of the characters is rubbish. Their standard run is slow as molasses and it takes forever to run across the battlefield. When you actually hit the “run” button, Right Bumper, you’ll speed up for about 45 seconds. You’ll soon run out of endurance to run faster and slow down at the same pace. Aiming the gun couldn’t be even more difficult. I always elected to use Lt. Tyler since he had a sniper and I could zoom in at least. Without Tyler, it’s like shooting a shotgun 400 yards away. You’ll feel like you miss repeatedly without any sense of direct hits. When you do happen to kill the opponent, the sensation of the kill is taken away by an emotionless death that raises questions – did he die of the gunshot or from knowing that he’s a Nazi in another WW2 game.
