Prince of Persia: Classic
Does this XBLA game translate into a classic adventure game?

by: Dakota Grabowski
June 25, 2007

Originally, the Prince of Persia franchise debuted in 1989. Then, in 2003, the series received a revival with the Sands of Time trilogy that pitted the Prince, the star of the series, in a much deeper storyline to repair all the damages he done with releasing the sands of time. With the ending of the trilogy in late 2005, Ubisoft decided it was best to recreate the original on the Xbox Live Arcade with a graphics overhaul.

The storyline goes a little something like this: the Sultan is gone and his Grand Vizier, Jaffar, has taken the kingdom hostage. With the kingdom under Jaffar’s control, he demands the hand of the princess in marriage. The only way out of this forced marriage for the princess is for the players to guide the Prince from the palace’s dungeon in captivity to her rescue.

The original Prince of Persia is still known to this day for its high difficulty. The Classic version doesn’t maintain the same level of difficulty – namely because of the addition of new checkpoints all throughout the levels and the ability to use a butterfly to show which direction to head. The combat is still moderately tricky since button mashers will have to diligently face the enemies or face death. Essentially, blocking and dodging is a necessity if players want to make it through the levels in time to save the princess. The platforming also remains superb and among the best I have ever experienced. This is platforming done correctly.

The developer, Gameloft, has taken it under their belt to give the original a revisualization. The first change that players will notice is the graphics. This isn’t a basic overhaul of the animations or explosions, all the graphics have been redone. The backgrounds are done with high quality and even the layout of the map remains the same. All other developers should take note to what Ubisoft and Gameloft have done here with the graphics.

Having to play Prince of Persia Classic in real time is a key factor that is kept from the original. Regrettably, players only have one hour to finish the game. This 60 minute timed undertaking isn’t the best solution to video games nowadays. In today’s current state of video games, it may actually be worse to have a 60 minute video game compared to the hundreds of hours that games such as the Elder Scrolls franchise offers. Prince of Persia offers the exact opposite of what I tend to like with my video games in terms of length. With little replay value, except to attempt to beat the record the players set for themselves, Prince of Persia is a quick fix for Xbox 360 fans of the action-adventure genre.

Oh, what a joy that Prince of Persia Classic is. It’s priced at 800 Microsoft Points (translated into $10) and is definitely worth it for adventure fanatics. The Sands of Time trilogy is one of my favorite in recent memory and this helps build upon the legacy. Lastly, there are two bonus modes to play -- Survival and Time Trials -- both that offer little in replay value. In the end, Prince of Persia offers a quick bang for the buck.
