In the 27th century, humans have colonized planets beyond earth's solar system. The colonists on these other planets are governed by Earth, which causes protest amongst the colonies. Before you know it, we have another American Revolution brewing. The four group planets that want independence from Earth are called ADAN Freedom Alliance. Earth soon dispatches its military called Terra Central Armed Forces (TCAF) to take care of the rebellion. In hoping to suppress the voices of oppression, the TCAF destroyed a planet called Acheron. Acheron was the capital of the ADAN Freedom Alliance group. Unfortunately, this only infuriated the ADAN group and started an interstellar war.
Project Slyheed is based around a story of three friends who are caught in between this war. Amongst the three friends are; Katana Faraway, Ellen Bernstein, and Margas Manson. All three are pilots who became friends during the TCAF training academy. When the war started, Margas Manson was deported from Earth because he was a native of Acheron. While heading back to Acheron, he saw his home planet being destroyed by the TCAF. In anguish, Margas Manson joins ADAN to destroy TCAF in revenge for his home planet. Arriving to the present day, Katana and Ellen are squared to face their friend Marquis Manson in an intergalactic battle. Can their friendship overcome the obligations of destroying each other at war or will they kill each other during the process?
I love you man!
The story itself might sound compelling, but it’s far from it. Square Enix is known to put a heavy dose of melo-drama/romance into CGI cut scenes that are awkward. The whole love interest and friendship shown in the game is really uncomfortable. There was a point where it looked like Katana and Marqus were about to kiss. Fortunately, Marqus punches him before he gets too close. You also can't connect to any of the characters because of the cheesy awkward cut scenes. For example, when your Instructor dies from ADAN forces, you’re saying to yourself 'who cares’. The characters don't really do much for you and you don't feel any connection towards them.
You play as Katana, who pilots a prototype spacecraft called the Delta Saber. The Delta Saber is fully customizable to suit a variety of weaponry. You can choose from a list of guns, missiles, anti-missiles, cannons, lasers, or special upgrades. You’re only allowed to put four weapons that fit into different sections on the Delta Saber. You can receive upgrades for more advanced parts as you proceed through the game. To buy these parts, you are given money after completing a stage. The problem is that you’re only granted a small amount of money and each part costs a lot of money. You can decide to either save up money for one, more powerful part or spend it on several cheaper parts. You can't go wrong with either choice but it gives the game a strategic feel.
The options given to you as you pilot the Delta Saber are really impressive. One of the features are “Match Speed', which matches your speed with your target. This leaves your spacecraft in cruise control while you prep up for the kill. Another is the targeting range system, which tells you if your target is in range to fire at. There are also special techniques that the Delta Saber can do, like slow down time, ram into battleships, and Berserk, which allows you to use all your weapons at once.
