Raven Squad Review

Raven Squad is a very unique twist as a FPS/RTS game. Unfortunately, it just sucks.

Raven Squad, a tactical action game set in the Amazonian jungles, blends your average (or less than average) first-person shooting game with the usual aspects of a real-time strategy game (RTS). I’m not a big fan of RTS games so I definitely wanted to go FPS style all the way. But to give the RTS side of things a fair advantage, I also tried a few missions as a RTS. Let’s just say both experiences weren’t that pleasing.
Atomic Motion are the brawn and brains behind this game. The idea was conceived and created with them being inspired by 80’s action films like Predator, Commando, Missing in Action and Delta Force. The game is set in 2011 where a team of mercenaries are out on a job to retrieve some lost corporate data when they run into a problem where their plane gets shot down. Once you recover with your group, you end up being right in the middle of a civil war. You need to complete the job and also help out in this war.
You are broken up into two three man groups for a total of six characters. Like any tactical squad, each man has their own certain skill with unique backgrounds, personalities, behaviors etc. While controlling one squad, you can send the other squad on to do specific things as you would with various squads in a normal RTS game. You can switch between the two squads anytime.
Its a very unique twist and idea to implement such a strategic process in what could have been just another first-person shooting game. Using the RTS side of things you can plan out routes, enemies, learn levels, view spots etc etc. Of course, you can just play the entire game as a RTS and simply give commands while the A.I. handles the soldiers as you command them. I was surprised to how simple the RTS aspects of the game are leading me to think this game is still just a FPS game where you can give a few commands to the squads from a top-down view.
This is a fairly easy game with some levels being more of a annoying challenge rather than hard. There is a major problem with the A.I. where your teammates will die and then die some more and will keep doing so requiring you to revive then over and over.
The worst part is the voice acting. This has been a problem for many of games this generation. Raven Squad takes it to a new level. Never used that custom tracks feature on the Xbox 360 before? Well you may want to look into using that feature and turning down all audio for this game to zero and have your own music. It'll be a better experience.
There is a cooperative mode included in the game so at least you can play through the game with a buddy offline and/or offline. This co-op mode can be played for the entire story mode. Unfortunately, I’ll say good luck trying to find someone to play this game with you online as there will be little to no one. There are no competitive versus modes to play either so once (or better yet if) you ever beat the story mode side of things that’s pretty much it for you.

Overall, Raven Squad is a nice idea with very bad execution. Achievement hunters might be pleased to know that these achievements aren't too hard to obtain but will require some work. Other than that, I can’t give a reason for anyone to even think about buying this game.
