Robotron 2084 Review
We take a look at the daddy of the Xbox Live Arcade shooters, and see just how well a game that is over twenty years old fairs on the Xbox 360 in our full review.

It all started with the fantastic Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, then Mutant Storm Reloaded, then Smash TV. Well now we finally have the inspiration for all of these titles, and sure enough it holds up pretty good. The game holds up despite it’s age, and much like the other Midway title Joust it has been updated a bit. The little pixilated characters and shots flying around seem, believe it or not a bit more colorful and finer, and in the background you have a nice 3D background to balance it all out. Thankfully, the updates don’t hamper the gameplay.

The game is pretty simple—you are on a square map with a few enemies shooting or coming at you, you also have some other obstacles on the map as well. The left stick moves your little guy and the right shoots, by pulling the stick in the direction you want to shoot. Some of the enemies you can’t actually kill, but they are usually slow enough that you can dodge. There are also people on the map that need saving, so you have to avoid obstacles while getting to them. Eventually this gets more and more complicated until there is so much on the board that it takes surgeon’s precision to navigate.

The game offers some more for people who buy it over Live. Besides being only five bucks, you also have scoreboards so that you can see how you stack against others online, or you can even play co-op with a person on the same 360 or across Live. I didn’t get a chance to check out how the co-op over Live worked, but if it is anything like the other co-op Xbox Live Arcade titles, it will work flawlessly. The way co-op works though is pretty interesting to say the least. One controls the movement and the other controls the firing on the game. You can also go against others online which is another interesting addition. To add more replay you of course have the Xbox 360 Achievements, so it helps to squeeze just a little bit more replay out of the overall game.

The price is right, and the game is a fantastic history lesson in shooters. When the game finally comes out to retail Xbox 360 systems if you liked Geometry Wars, you will definitely like this one, and if you had to get one classic, let it be this one.
