The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Review
Assault on Dark Athena brings back one of the best games last gen on the original Xbox completely revamped as well as an entire new campaign making this title two games in one.

by: Michael Ogunnubi
April 26, 2009

Escape from Butcher Bay for the original Xbox managed to break the mold of crappy movie games, bringing Vin Diesel’s famous Riddick character to the gaming world spotlight and slicing its way to the forefront as a sleeper hit to be dealt with. I for one actually missed out on Escape from Butcher Bay so I was very delighted to find out that Starbreeze completely remastered the original title and included it in all its current gen glory with Assault on Dark Athena. In times like this, you have to appreciate developers really packing in more bang for your buck and this game surely have it’s value. After spending some quality time with both campaigns, Assault on Dark Athena is a sequel worthy of the original in almost every way.

As I said above, Assault on Dark Athena packs in two campaigns. One being Escape from Butcher Bay and the all new Assault on Dark Athena. I’ll begin with the remake of Escape from Butcher Bay. As a huge fan of Starbreeze’s past project, The Darkness I felt immediately at home…in fact, I little too at home. Those who played The Darkness will notice immediately how much everything thing in this game basically resembles The Darkness from the loading screens, graphics, HUD, menu, multiplayer etc. I felt as if this title should’ve been called The Darkness: Riddick Edition instead. It’s very ridiculous like Starbreeze took everything from that game and replaced it with the Riddick story.

Anyway, Escape from Butcher Bay is the chronologically the first in the series so for those who missed that game like me, smart choice would be starting out with this campaign to learn the backdrop a bit and even for those who played the original its completely worth it to check it out. The game begins with Riddick and two other prisoners waiting with a guard at the entrance of a prison where you ultimately kill that guard and escape. After going through the facility and escaping through the sewers using stealth and melee to get around, you’re brought to what seems like a flash back or just a dream remembering Riddick’s past or dreams to where he is now being given off to another prison under the control of Hoxie and thus the story begins. Riddick is now in a new jail facility, Butcher Bay; where his plans to escape from Butcher begin…see what I did there?

Greeted by an obnoxious guard (Played by Xzibit and shown above) you quickly learn the rules and regulations of the prison and who runs what. The guard and inmates are all being ruled and tortured by the “local bully,” Rust and gang, the Aquilans. Being the rumored baddass that Riddick is, the locals ask for his help to take down Rust and in return for information. From there, the escape begins going through the infirmary and on forward.
